Early Review: Haven - "Countdown"

By Jamie Ruby

HavenTonight's episode picks off where the last left off, after Audrey (Emily Rose) told Duke (Eric Balfour) that she remembered everything. I have to say, I was really surprised by this development (and subsequent development through this episode), as I expected it to stretch longer through the season, and also, I wasn't even sure she would actually be completely "Audrey" again. However, even though I didn't expect the revelation, I am happy for it. I was also glad that characters continue to try to come up with different ways to get rid of the troubles.

Early Review: Reign Premieres Tonight on the CW

By Jamie Ruby

ReignTonight, following an all new episode of The Vampire Diaries, The CW will premiere it's new series Reign. The show follows Mary Stuart, played by Adelaide Kane, as she is taken away from the convent where she has been hidden growing up, and brought to France for her arranged engagement to the King's son, Prince Francis (Toby Regbo). Will she secure the engagement for Scotland or follow her heart? They have been engaged since she was six. This becomes more complicated by the presence of Francis's handsome bastard half-brother Sebastian "Bash" (Torrance Coombs), who is interested in the future queen, and Queen Catherine (Megan Follows), who believes Mary will become a problem for her son Francis after Nostradamus (Rossif Sutherland) predicts she will cause his death. The queen will stop at nothing to protect her family. Mary must learn to navigate the French Court and decide who she can trust.

The Good Wife 5.3 Review: “A Precious Commodity”

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

thegoodwife-iconI badly underestimated both Will’s capacity for holding personal grudges and his friendship with Diane. I figured that if he was gracious in last season’s finale about Diane’s pursuit of the judgeship, he would do everything he could to make her exit from the firm as smooth as possible. No, Diane’s unnecessary interview to trash Will effectively turned him into a cold bastard after the first act. It kicked off a very busy (as per usual with this show) and dramatic episode. In fact, it was so busy at one point that I openly wondered how Alicia was able to keep from becoming a blubbering mess drowning in endless glasses of wine.

The Walking Dead 4.1 Review: “30 Days Without an Accident”

By John Keegan and Paul Pearson

The-Walking-Dead-iconAs AMC shows go, The Walking Dead seems more determined to take after Mad Men with its contained season arcs, rather than the intense serialisation of Breaking Bad; most of the premiere episode’s run is about getting the audience caught up, not just on what’s happened in previous seasons, but on the sweeping changes that both the prison and the core group of characters have undergone. It helps to reset any concerns that viewers might’ve had from previous seasons, but there’s also the sense of a new showrunner determined to prove his mettle and introduce us to his version of The Walking Dead.

Karl Urban and Michael Ealy Talk Almost Human

By Jamie Ruby

Almost HumanThe new FOX series, Almost Human, which premieres November 4th*, takes place in the year 2048. The series follows Detective John Kennex, played by Karl Urban, who wakes up from a 17-month coma after surviving an attack agains the police department. He's lost his partner, his leg, and much of his memory of the event. Even though not really fit for duty and still suffering the "psychological rejection of his sythetic body part," Kennex is requested to return to work by Captain Sandra Maldonado (Lili Taylor). He reluctantly agrees but is annoyed by the new requirement that every cop must take an android as a partner.

After ending his partnership with one of the robots after he discovers some discriminating evidence on him, Kennex is partnered with Dorian, played by Michael Ealy, an android from a line of robots no longer in use because of their "flaws" of emotional responses.

Though a struggle, Kennex must learn to work with his partner and except their new arrangement. Dorian might just be what Kennex needs to move on.
