SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Video Interview: The Wilds' Zack Calderon & Aidan Laprete on Friendships & High Stakes

The WildsSeason one of The Wilds followed a group of teen girls who crashed on a deserted island and had to band together to survive what turned out to be not an accident, but rather part of a twisted experiment. Season two, which comes to Prime Video on May 6th, brings the addition of a group of males, the control group, who find themselves in a similar situation.

The boys group, like the girls, must learn to get along and work together if they want to survival their new harsh reality. “I think that friendship is super important,” Zack Calderon, who plays the character of Rafael Garcia, told SciFi Vision during a recent roundtable. “I think that with any friendship, when put in high stress situations, it definitely tests that friendship; it tests the interpersonal relationship of the people involved in the friendship. And I think, with this show, this is the highest of stakes…and there're countless possibilities when it comes to high stakes.”

Exclusive: American Song Contest Semi-Finalist Michael Bolton Talks Inspiration, Collaboration, & More

Michael BoltonNBC’s music competition series American Song Contest, featuring live performances representing the fifty states, US territories, and the nation’s capital, first premiered over a month ago. Boasting both new and established artists, the series is based on the international series, Eurovision Song Contest. Legendary singer and songwriter Michael Bolton took to the stage in the first round to represent Connecticut with his song “Beautiful World.” Last night, he performed once more during the semi-finals.

According to the Grammy winner, who spoke with SciFi Vision recently, when he was asked to represent his state, he knew right away he wanted to do it. “It was a no brainer,” said Bolton. “Connecticut is where I was born and raised and where I still live today. I have so many vivid memories of growing up there, trying to get my cassette tapes into local record stores, playing gigs at bars I was too young to be in, busking on the streets to get a slice of pizza and a soft drink. There was a very supportive community for young artists there, and I am grateful for the support I received over the years.”

The series reminded him of his roots. “It’s such a great platform for singer songwriters to be able to share new music to a large audience and for people to embrace such a diversity of styles and genres. It reminds me of how much great creativity there is out there,” said the musician about the competition.

Interview: Fear the Walking Dead's Blades, Garcia, & Hollman on Daniel's State of Mind

***The following interview contains spoilers for 7.11***

Fear the Walking DeadIn last night’s all-new episode of Fear the Walking Dead, Daniel (Rubén Blades)’s mind continues to break down and he takes off on his own, thinking Ofelia is alive. Luciana (Danay Garcia), who has been helping him with his memory, and Wes (Colby Hollman) go after him, while the others go after the weapons cache. Things go from bad to worse when the three of them are captured by Arno (Spenser Granese), who uses Daniel’s mental state to his advantage, telling him that he has Ofelia and will take him to her, if he tells him where the weapons are. Daniel sends him to the wrong coordinates, but in the end tortures Arno and puts Luciana and Wes in danger trying to get back his daughter.

Recently, SciFi Vision talked to Blades, Garcia, and Hollman at a roundtable interview about how dangerous Daniel has become and if he still can be trusted and useful.

“I think what happens right now is that Daniel is traveling between the dark and the light,” Blades told SciFi Vision. “I mean, when he's in the light, he's very effective…I mean, Daniel got them there, but he got him out of there as well. So, that's the two sides of the coin that Luciana is considering in the end, the larger plan, the longer view. It’s like, he can help [them] actually, with Strand (Colman Domingo). If we lose him, Morgan (Lenny James) may not have the capacity to understand what Strand is going to be doing, and how Strand thinks, as Daniel does. So, he is dangerous, and in that state, when he's in the dark, he can get you killed, but when he's in the light, he can save you. So, it's like a roll of the dice at this point.”

The Wilds Season Two Shines, but not Quite as Bright

The WildsMay 6th Prime Video premieres the second season of the highly-anticipated young adult series The Wilds. Season one centers around a group of teenage girls stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash, however, it is revealed early on that it was not a real crash but rather part of an experiment perpetrated by Gretchen Klein (Rachel Griffiths), out to prove that women can band together and survive without the problems associated with a male-dominated society. She called the girls group the Dawn of Eve.

The season follows the girls as they struggle to find ways to endure and come to terms with their predicament, interspersed with flashbacks of the hardships they faced before the island and flashforwards of after they are “rescued” and held at a bunker by Gretchen and her men, still being lied to.

While on the island, one girl, Leah (Sarah Pidgeon), starts to suspect that the crash is not all it seems and that one of the girls, Nora (Helena Howard), is in fact in on the ruse and communicating with someone outside the island. Of course she is right, but no one believes her.

Exclusive: Fear the Walking Dead's Alycia Debnam-Carey on Directing "Ofelia"

***The following interview contains spoilers for episode 7.11***

Alycia Debnam-CareyTonight, on an all-new episode of Fear the Walking Dead, Daniel (Ruben Bladés)’s mental state declines, and it puts everyone in danger. The episode, called “Ofelia,” marks the directorial debut of Alycia Debnam-Carey, who stars as Alicia on the series.

Debnam-Carey had thought about directing long before working on Fear. “It is something I've thought about for quite a long time, I'd say,” the actress told SciFi Vision in a recent exclusive interview. “I think, even as a kid, I was always framing my worldview at a perspective that was quite sort of cinematic and had a frame of the world that kind of always [had] the storytelling aspect. I think that's just a part of my creativity as a person, I suppose.”

Working on the series, however, was when it became real for the actress, when she was encouraged by other directors, as well as producing director on the series, Michael Satrazemis.

The actress felt lucky to have the support of fellow cast members in the episode as well. “I love working with Ruben and Colby [Hollman] and Danay [Garcia] and Spenser [Granese],” said Debnam-Carey. “They were all really generous, really trusting, really open actors…I've known their character arcs for years; I’ve known them as people for years. There is that inherent level of trust that we have, and they wanted to see me succeed.”

Video Interview: The Wilds' Sarah Streicher & Amy Harris on Adding a Male Perspective

Sarah Streicher and Amy HarrisThe Wilds, which returns to Prime Video on May 6th, follows a group of teenage girls that have crashed on a deserted island, which it’s later revealed was not by accident, but rather part of an experiment. The second season brings with it the addition of the boys’ group and shows how their experiences compare to the girls. The writers recognize not all the fans are on board with the addition, but it was important to tell that side as well, according to executive producers and writers Sarah Streicher and Amy Harris.

“We really tried to tell the story authentically and honestly,” Harris told SciFi Vision during a recent roundtable interview. “I think Gretchen (Rachel Griffiths) very wisely realized a control group has to happen, because if all she shows as a group of women doing a good job, they could argue men would have done the same. So, I think once we just sort of started chasing what Gretchen's next [move was], like, what would she actually be doing, it was very clear to us that the boys’ island had to come.

Video Interview: Undone Stars Angelique Cabral & Constance Marie

***The following interview contains slight spoilers for season 2***

Angelique Cabral and Constance MarieYesterday, Amazon released season two of the animated dramedy Undone. The series, which comes from creators Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, stars Rosa Salazar as Alma, who lives in Texas with her mother, Camila (Constance Marie), and sister, Becca (Angelique Cabral). In season one, after a car accident, Rosa finds herself with the ability to move through time, which she uses to find the truth about her father (Bob Odenkirks)’s death. In season two, Rosa convinces her reluctant sister to help her uncover more truth of their past.

SciFi Vision recently spoke to Marie and Cabral as part of a roundtable interview to promote the series, where we asked the actresses about the parts in the characters they felt were the easiest and most difficult to connect to.

“The easiest part for me to connect to Becca is her kind of good girl, uptight side,” said Cabral. “Then, where I am in my life personally as a mother in this industry post COVID, all of it is kind of like the not giving a crap and just fully leaning into the things I want to know and care about. I think that that's where Becca ends up in this season, just kind of like throwing abandon to the [wind] and just going all in.”

Exclusive Video Interview: Michelle MacLaren on Directing Shining Girls

The following interview contains slight spoilers for the premise of Shining Girls.

Michelle MacLarenToday, the new series, Shining Girls, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Lauren Beukes, premieres on Apple TV+. The series follows Kirby Mazrachi (Elisabeth Moss), who after a traumatic assault where her attacker was never found, is left in an ever-changing reality. Years after the attack, her world is upended when she realizes a recent murder victim suffered identical injuries to her own. Kirby, now an archivist working at a newspaper after putting her career on hold, enlists the help of reporter Dan Velazquez (Wagner Moura) to identify her attacker and understand the shifting world around her.

The eight-episode series is a thriller but also involves science fiction elements. Executive producer Michelle MacLaren, who also directed some of the episodes, loved the “genre bending” of the project, which was new for her. “I always feel it's fun to take on things I haven't done before that I find challenging and a little bit scary,” MacLaren told SciFi VIsion. “It had all those factors involved, and so I was very fortunate to say, ‘yes,’ and also it was Apple TV plus that was making it, who I love working with.”
