SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet

Video Interview: Josha Stradowski & Marcus Rutherford Star in The Wheel of Time, 11/19 on Prime Video

The Wheel of TimeAdapted for television by Rafe Judkins, The Wheel of Time, based on the best-selling fantasy novels by Robert Jordan, is set in a world where magic exists but only women are allowed to wield it. The story follows Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) of the powerful Aes Sendai, who goes on a perilous journey with five young men and women from Two Rivers, to determine which one is the prophesied Dragon Reborn who will either save or destroy the world. The series premieres November 19th on Prime Video.

There is a lot of content in the books, so the actors have to strike a balance between looking a head and working moment to moment in the script, according to Josha Stradowski, who stars as Rand, one of the five candidates. “I guess it's trying to find the balance between [it],” said the actor to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision during a roundtable interview, “because even if you're far ahead in the books, you just can always use bits and pieces that you find. You just use that as inspiration, and although it might be a little bit farther plot-wise, I think you can still use it. It's just a matter of finding that balance and make sure that it works for you; don't let it confuse you in any way.”

Stradowski told SciFi Vision that he found commonality with his character when it came to the way he views things. “I think, for me, what I appreciate in Rand and [what] was maybe easier to connect with was that he really appreciates a life in nature and a more simple life. Which doesn't mean that it's at the surface or without complexity, but I kind of feel I'm in the same headspace as Rand in that way.”

Video Interview: Griffin Gluck & Hallea Jones Talk Locke & Key Season 2

Locke & KeyOn season two of Locke & Key, the demon Dodge has taken on the form of a student at Matheson Academy, Gabe, played by Griffin Gluck, in order to get closer to Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and both recover the keys and hopefully make one of his own. He is helped by Eden, played by Hallea Jones, who at the end of last season was struck with demonic Whispering Iron and possessed.

During a recent roundtable with the press, the two talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision about where they drew inspiration for their portrayals from besides the script. Gluck said that he watched interviews as well as a lot of television and movies to find characters who would be considered psychopaths. “I watched a lot of interviews with evil characters, and I think one that I sort of might not necessarily have drawn a lot from, but got really inspired [by], was actually Christian Bale in [American Psycho]… I think Gabe is very much a psychopath as much as he is a demon. He's just he's dead inside, and I think he's uncomfortable with emotion. I find that to be terrifying…I remember just watching a lot of TV, a lot of movies, and just finding characters that had really just psychopathic behaviors and trying to emanate that in any way I could.”

For Jones, it was Regina George in Mean Girls for season one and also Megan Fox in Jennifer’s Body for season two.  “Regina George was my season one for sure influence, and of course I wanted to make Eden not Regina George like as much as possible, but there's only so many ways that you can spin the popular mean girl. So, with season two, it was nice to combine the Jennifer's Body perspective as well. I mean, Megan Fox is just iconic, just point blank, period, so it was fun to kind of like be like, ‘How crazy can I go?’ She's such a great icon for that kind of blood-loving crazy girl thing.”

Exclusive: Pollyanna McIntosh Talks Jadis's New Purpose on The Walking Dead: World Beyond

***This interview contains major spoilers for 2.06***

Pollyanna McIntoshRecently, more crossover elements were added from the flagship series to The Walking Dead: World Beyond, when the character of Jadis, played by Pollyanna McIntosh, was revealed to be working as an officer of the Civil Republic. Jadis, also known as Anne on The Walking Dead, was the leader of the Scavengers that took a wounded Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) away on a CRM helicopter never to be seen again.

Still, not a lot is known about the character and her agenda. According to McIntosh, who talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview on Friday, she does believe in the cause “for the good of humanity,” but Jadis still does what is best for Jadis. “At the end of the day,” said the actress, “we've seen that before, but she does have feelings, and she does really, really want the best that civilization can have…She's seen the world much more than most people in this new universe of The Walking Dead: World Beyond have seen it…She's now like, ‘This is my new purpose.’ This is what what she wants for the world. So, I do believe it's for the greater good, but are some people are going to have to suffer in the meantime? Sure. And is she going to try and make sure she suffers as little as possible? Sure.”

Fans were surprised that Jadis took the last name Stokes, which comes from the character of Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), a priest on The Walking Dead that she had a romantic relationship with. The actress said that the idea of Jadis being Mrs. Stokes is a really funny nod to the fan base. “It's just fun for the fandom to go, ‘Oh, did you notice that that's her name?’…[T]he reasons why, people can make their own. I think there's just enough for people to go their own ways with things, and then they might find they were right, or they were wrong and there's something more exciting afoot. But I think that the nod to Gabriel really is such a genius thing. It's like, ‘I'm not going to give away my own name, and I'm going to remember my past and honor it, but I'm also going to remember that, that way madness lies.’ ”

Exclusive: Mo Collins Talks Crying on Camera, Driving an 18 Wheeler, & More on Fear the Walking Dead

***This interview contains major spoilers for 7.04***

Mo CollinsOn the newest episode of Fear the Walking Dead, Sarah, played by Mo Collins, wakes up at a decommissioned fort where she and the others were brought by the helicopter, and she immediately takes off to look for her brother, Wendell (Daryl “Chill” Mitchell). She ends up running into Josiah (Demetrius Grosse), who wants revenge on Morgan (Lennie James) for killing his twin brother. Sarah agrees to deliver Morgan to him, if he will help her find her own brother.

Collins, who recently spoke to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview, doesn’t believe that Sarah ever planned to let him kill Morgan. “Sarah is a very loyal person,” said that actress, “and [what] Sarah also knows and understands about this world is that things can change on a dime. So, in that moment, of course, it was the right choice to say that and do that, because it was about Wendell. That's the objective, and if that's what needs to happen to get to Wendell, that's what's going to happen, but I do believe in the back of her brain, she's going, ‘Shit could change.’”

The actress has a special bond with Mitchell outside of the show. “What you see in Sarah and Wendell is true of Chill and Mo. It just sort of landed that way, the second we met. We really, really do love each other, and we laugh our butts off. We'll cry together. We'll have deep, deep conversations. It's a pretty deep and wonderful relationship…He is my brother for life.”

Doctor Who - War of the Sontarans - 13.02 - Recap & Review

***Following the review is a detailed recap of the episode. Note that there are many spoilers for episode 13.02 in both the review and recap, so please don't read any further until you've watched it.***

Doctor Who: Flux
On tonight's episode of Doctor Who, written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Jamie Magnus Stone, the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker), Yaz (Mandip Gill), and Dan (John Bishop) end up on the battlefield of the Crimean War where they meet Nurse Mary Seacole (Sara Powell) and Lieutenant General Logan (Gerald Kyd). Only the British aren’t fighting the Russians, but the Sontarans - on horseback! Things continue to go wrong, however, when Dan and Yaz fall through time and the Doctor is stuck alone in 1855.

The Doctor must race against time to not only stop the Sontarans from turning the Earth into their outpost, but to save a captured Yaz and Vinder (Jacob Anderson) from Swarm (Sam Spruell) and Azure (Rochenda Sandall) and stop time itself from breaking apart completely and taking her friends with it.

This week’s episode of the series I felt was much more cohesive than the last. While there were some unnecessary complications that probably would have kept it more linear (such as a short scene where Yaz meets Williamson [Steve Oram]), it flowed together well. The episode was quick-paced and the pieces fell into place. I think the idea of time itself coming apart and it affecting the TARDIS is really interesting. We are so used to the TARDIS being a place of safety, and it’s a huge added danger when it’s not.

Collins, Nisenson, & Evangelista Talk Season 7 of Fear the Walking Dead

Fear the Walking DeadAt the end of last season of Fear the Walking Dead, Sarah (Mo Collins) and Charlie (Alexa Nisenson) both got on a CRM helicopter with the others before the nuclear blast, leading fans to wonder how else crossover elements from the other The Walking Dead series may come into play this season on the show. In a recent roundtable interview with the press, the actresses couldn’t say much, but Nisenson gave a little tease to SciFi Vision. “I think it’s really interesting how we've been able to incorporate it into this universe and into this show…I wish I could say more, but it's such an interesting journey that they all go on this season, and I'm really excited for everyone to see it.”

The character of Sherry, on the other hand, went into a storm shelter with Dwight (Austin Amelio) before the bomb went off. Evangelista told the site during the interview that the two of them ended in a good place in their relationship, but there will still be some challenges this season. “They survived the bomb explosion, and in those last few moments…were able to do something for somebody else together, and realizing how that made them both feel, but then also how it empowered both of them, I think it has given them this mission moving forward, and I think they like being mission-oriented people. I do think that they help each other, and they make each other stronger, and they certainly serve as each other's moral compass, but that being said, these are two very strong characters that have grown and evolved so much individually. I think there is going to be a lot of tension in this new chapter with this new mission, both within the relationship, of course, but in the environment that's very challenging in itself.”

4K Blu-ray Review: Old Offers a Chilling and Engaging Story, Now Available

OldIn the film Old, which SciFi Vision was provided on 4K for review, Guy (Gael García Bernal) and Prisca Cappa (Vicky Krieps) are about to get a divorce but decide to take one last family vacation before breaking it to their two children, 11-year-old Maddox (Alexa Swinton) and 6-year-old Trent (Nolan River). Prisca is elated to find such a great deal for a resort online, and when they get there, they are offered access to a secluded too-good-to-be-true beach. They are not completely alone, however, as another family, including surgeon Charles (Rufus Sewell), his wife Chrystal (Abbey Lee), their 6-year-old daughter Kara, and his elderly mother, Agnes (Kathleen Chalfant) are offered the same access. Things get a little odd when the driver taking them to the beach (Shyamalan) gives them way too much packed food and sends them the rest of the way on foot. They soon discover that this paradise is even less exclusive and that it’s already occupied by rapper Mid-Sized Sedan (Aaron Pierre), and later another couple, nurse Jarin (Ken Leung) and Patricia Carmichael (Nikki Amuka-Bird).

Everything is fine until a body washes up on shore and accusations start flying. Things go from bad to worse when the adults notice that the children have aged by about five years. They also quickly discover that they are unable to leave, as they black out and end up back on the beach. Time continues to pass, and they realize that if they can’t get off the island, they may die of old age in the space of a day.

As with other films by Shyamalan, who both wrote and directed the movie, it can be quite dark and chilling at times. As much of it takes place in an open area on a beach, the seclusion and using the rocks and cliffs the way they did gives it that foreboding claustrophobia. The director found ways to make the alluring also feel sinister.

Exclusive: Aaron Ashmore on Duncan's Expanded Role in Locke & Key Season Two

***This interview contains major season two spoilers***

Aaron AshmoreIn season two of Locke & Key, Duncan, played by Aaron Ashmore, has his memories of magic returned to him, which include the ability to forge keys, which is what the antagonist of the season, Gabe/Dutch (Griffin Gluck), wants most.

This season, viewers get a lot more of Duncan’s story, including his relationship with Brian (Milton Barnes), explained Ashmore in an exclusive interview with Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision. “We sort of alluded to the fact that Duncan was in a relationship, or sort of mentioned that, but we never really got to see too much of his backstory. So, I think that's really nice that we get to see some of his romantic interest.”

A big part of Duncan’s story this season is when his memories are returned. “I think we just lay into a little bit more throughout the second season, of where Duncan's coming from exactly, the whole memory loss element, because it's not so much that he just can't remember magic, like the rest of the adults; there's another element to it, where pieces of his past have been removed. He's struggling not only with that, but also this idea of potentially seeing these magic things, and then that being erased.”
