Early Review: "Alphas" Season 2 Premiere

By Jamie Ruby

AlphasAlphas returns to Syfy tonight for its second season premiere, "Wake Up Call." The series follows a group of people with superhuman abilities – Bill Harken (Malik Yoba) who has extraordinary strength, Cameron Hicks (Warren Christie) who has spot on accuracy, Rachel Pirzad (Azita Ghanizada) who has heightened senses, Nina Theroux (Laura Mennell) who can control people's thoughts, and Gary Bell (Ryan Cartwright), an autistic who can see electronic signals in the air. Each power however also has a downside. The group is led by Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn). Together they work for the government to solve cases and track down other Alphas who are out of control, including the group Red Flag.

AlphasLast season ended with Rosen revealing to the public the existence of the Alphas, in order to stop Stanton Parrish (John Pyper-Ferguson). The government covered it up and imprisoned Rosen.

After disbanding the group must come together to rescue Rosen and put things right again.

The premiere episode has a lot going on. At the end of the episode I looked up in surprise because it did not seem at all like I had watched it for forty plus minutes. The episode is action-packed and really does keep you on the edge of your seat, not sure how things are going to go, because you don't know what the Alphas will do to get out of Bighamton, the prison for uncontrollable Alphas.

AlphasI really love this show, and this season is starting out even better than last. The plot moved forward very quickly, but it also took time for some character development as you see the group after being left to their own devices without Rosen. I especially enjoyed Cartwright's performance; he did a superb job of conveying his pain and confusion.

If you liked last season of Alphas, you're sure to love this one, and even if you've never seen it, it's a great place to jump back in.

Alphas premieres tonight on Syfy.
