I’ll start with the obvious: yes, I realized who the writers were for the episode pretty early. And yes, I think some of their usual flaws crept into the script, particularly the awkward dialogue that didn’t quite ring true here and there. But surprisingly, I found this to be one of their best efforts, and a strong episode for the season as a whole.

I suppose, after the previous episode, the Brothers Winchester deserved a bit of a break. I’m not sure how much of a break this actually is, or whether or not a callback to “Adventures in Babysitting” was really necessary, but there we are. And since the show has run a lot longer than anyone ever imagined it could, I suppose it’s time for the writers to address what it means for the Hunters to raise the next generation in the post-apocalyptic era.

There are few things an episode of Supernatural can bring to the table above and beyond Castiel and Crowley to make it worthwhile. Adding Meg to the equation is one of them. Meg is one of the oldest villains of the series, and Rachel Miner has definitely made the role her own. Her snarky line delivery couldn’t be more perfect, especially since it has to counterbalance one of the most grueling situations yet.

After the gloriousness of the previous episode, which was Ben Edlund hitting all cylinders, I suppose it makes sense that this would be a bit of a letdown. After all, a lot of the excitement that came out of the previous episode was the potential for the future, especially with the announcement that “Supernatural” was going to get a ninth season! So a bit of a backslide into the demon tablet plot thread was naturally going to feel like a step back.

This episode was a bit of a sea change, coming off of the misguided attempt at humor that derailed the previous installment. It also brought a lot of the underlying issues between Sam and Dean to the forefront, providing a logical basis for the angst that will surely follow.

The seventh season finale was easily one of the most disappointing in the entire series run. Not only did it deliver a tepid conclusion to the Leviathan arc, which clearly was beyond the ability of the writers to implement on a budget, but it left Dean sitting in Purgatory without much rhyme or reason. Getting out of that mess was never going to be easy.

Coming into this season finale, I had two expectations: first, that the Leviathan plot arc would be resolved, and second, that Bobby would be shuffled off into the great beyond once and for all. Both took place in this episode, but I can't say that the execution was up to the usual level of "Supernatural" excellence.

The hunt is on for the weapons needed to take down Dick Roman and the Leviathans, and the Brothers Winchester follow the fetch quest to one of the few remaining Alphas, once Crowley makes it clear that he's not getting involved until the Winchesters prove they can get the job done by collecting the rest of the pieces of the puzzle. Which, of course, is easier said than done.

Fans of "Supernatural" got a boost before this episode with the announcement of an impending eighth season. Not that this turn of events is particularly shocking at this point, but who ever thought that the show fans had to fight to keep on the air in the early days would make it eight seasons?
