"The Americans:" Stan Pulls the Trigger PDF Print Email
Interviews
Written by Karen Moul

Noah Emmerich on FX's  Last night’s episode of The Americans was a big one for FBI agent Stan Beeman. The agency wanted payback for the Russian attack on the scientists, and Stan was adamant that he would not participate in an extrajudicial killing. But once his partner turned up his dead Stan didn’t just participate, he pulled the trigger.

Actor Noah Emmerich gave us some insight into his character’s state of mind.

“I think he sees it as a justifiable and promised retaliation for the murder on American soil of a federal agent,” he explained. “I think it would be more dangerous, from Stan’s point of view, to do nothing, to not retaliate, to therefore give the KGB a green light in saying you can indiscriminately execute American citizens on American soil.”

“I don’t think there’s any pleasure in it at all,” Emmerich continued. “I think it is revenge. I don’t think it’s personal, though, I think it’s political.

“It’s a Cold War, and he’s made it clear, he’s drawn a line that unless Amador is returned in health to his job there will repercussions, and if you don’t follow through with that threat then you lose all credibility in the future. So in some way I think that’s in fact what drives Stan to do that.”

Justified 4.10 Review: “Get Drew” PDF Print Email
Television
Written by John Keegan

By John Keegan and Henry Tran

Justified_iconEverybody wants Drew (Goddamn) Thompson. I personally found the depth of this episode most impressive despite its lack of overt action. Justified may be a Western set in modern times, but there doesn’t always have to be a shootout present in every episode of a season. Since Drew Thompson is on the run, that prompts much of Harlan County to go into a kind of craze. Boyd wants him to give him to Theo Tonin; The Marshals want him to close a 30-year old cold case; Ellen May sees him as her savior from a destitute life.

John Ratzenberger Guest Stars on FX's "Legit" PDF Print Email
Interviews

John RatzenbergerLegit pours on some star power this week when John Ratzenberger (Cheers, Toy Story) guest stars as Steve and Billy’s dad, Walter. It seems mom Janice has become a hoarder, forcing Walter to move into a tent in the backyard, and of course Jim’s intervention goes awry.

Ratzenberger is a fan of Legit’s aggressive humor. “When I read the Legit script,” he says, “I laughed. I thought, ‘Oh, this is really politically incorrect, but it’s really funny.’

“The writing is the most important part,” he explains. “If you ever noticed with Cheers and Legit, they’re very similar in that you never see the joke coming. With most TV comedies, you know what the joke’s going to be. You can see it three pages away, but with Legit, you don’t see it coming. That’s what I like about it.”

We talked to Ratzenberger about his character, Walter, and his many other film, TV and philanthropic projects. Check out the interview and tune in to Legit Thursdays at 10:30.

AHS: For Sr. Mary Eunice, Death Was "Her Only Way Out" PDF Print Email
Interviews

American Horror StoryAs American Horror Story: Asylum draws to a close, one of the most shocking moments has been Sr. Mary Eunice’s fall from the top of the staircase. With just a little push from Monsignor O'Hara, the good sister and the devil fell together to their deaths.

“I think the way that she dies [is] more of an assisted suicide,” explained actress Lily Rabe, “a consensual death with the Monsignor. And I think that she’s certainly trying to free herself and also get this devil that she has become away from everyone else.”

In a way, Sr. Mary seized control, if only for a moment. Rabe feels that “it is her most heroic moment and also her only choice at that point.”

Will Rabe return to AHS for season three? She won’t say.

“I have no idea,” claims the actress. “I can’t say a word. I’m so sorry. I know it’s such a boring interview sometimes with us at American Horror Story, I just can’t say a word.

“I would certainly love to be back, that’s for sure. It’s such a great job.”

Rabe recently spoke with journalists about her experience playing a possessed nun and working with such a talented cast. Check out the transcript of that conversation and don’t miss the final episodes Wednesdays on FX.

Chloe Sevigny on AHS:Asylum: "Shelley becomes more and more helpless" PDF Print Email
Interviews

American Horror Story: AsylumJust when we think American Horror Story can’t get any more ghastly, the writers come up with another shocking surprise. This week’s sickening twist saw Shelley at Dr. Arden’s mercy; he’s amputated her legs, so there will be no escape.

Even actress Chloe Sevigny was a bit frightened shooting the scenes. “It’s quite scary because James [Cromwell] was so big and he was wielding this big paperweight at me. He was getting really close and it was pretty frightening, actually, doing that scene. His arms are so long, I was so afraid he was actually going to knock me out."

Believe it or not, things can and will get worse. Sevigny spilled a few details: “She becomes more and more helpless. It’s very tragic, actually.

“I think he wants to make it so she can’t run away. And it only gets worse for Shelley.”

Does Shelley’s fate lie with the other creatures living outside the asylum? “She might be going in that direction,” Sevigny told us.

“You see her transformed into something, something not so pleasant to look at. It’s four hours of prosthetic makeup.”
