Everybody wants Drew (Goddamn) Thompson. I personally found the depth of this episode most impressive despite its lack of overt action. Justified may be a Western set in modern times, but there doesn’t always have to be a shootout present in every episode of a season. Since Drew Thompson is on the run, that prompts much of Harlan County to go into a kind of craze. Boyd wants him to give him to Theo Tonin; The Marshals want him to close a 30-year old cold case; Ellen May sees him as her savior from a destitute life.

All of the focus this season on "Justified" has drifted from three main villains in Boyd, Limehouse, and Quarles. The ignored small-time criminals were Johnny Crowder and Arlo. Being loyal lackeys for Boyd through the season can do that. One figures very much in this episode and the other sets up things for future stories in the next season. For now, Raylan goes hunting for both Quarles, who is suspected of shooting and killing his State Trooper friend. It's an exciting, often tense, dangerous journey through many parts of Harlan. The episode pays off a lot of the little subplots that were presented through the season, some in rather shocking ways.

Robert Quarles just can't seem to die. Multiple people in different parts of Kentucky and even another state want him dead, yet he keeps going like a cockroach. It's amazing, really, given that he's descended to being a drug-addled rogue psychopath. That seems to make him even more dangerous.

As this episode was running, I actually felt the slightest bit of sympathy for Quarles. Then I remembered that he is a low-down, sadistic psychopath who is probably even more dangerous now that he has nothing to lose. Boyd had made it his mission from the beginning to get rid of this interloper, and with the sneaky way in which he stole the sheriff's election out from under Quarles' clutches, his job was finally finished.

I love that this show's plot is so versatile that it will highlight certain characters in one episode, yet that doesn't take away from other characters. Here, Limehouse and Boyd get the spotlight. That doesn't mean Quarles is forgotten. Quarles is now Raylan's primary concern.

Robert Quarles tried to pull off something that would makes things real complicated for his two chief opponents. There were mixed results that followed. For a time, all of the investigations converged towards Raylan, with the very real possibility that he might be booted from the Marshal Service.

This is just more preparation for the coming war that's about to befall the characters on this show. More threats are doled out, pieces get moved into place, and some information gets clarified.

This fine season of "Justified" continues on. While I have the small inkling that a stumble might just be around the corner, I'm really enjoying the ride for however long it keeps going. The danger in Harlan County seems to escalate with every episode, and it's kind of neat to see how each character reacts to those events.
