By Jamie Ruby Not since Lost has a show taken me on a journey that made me question the story at every turn. The complexity of Awake is one of the best parts of the show, in my opinion. Through the whole season I was guessing and making theories about what was really going on; which reality was real, if any. At the end of the journey I'm still left with questions, though surprisingly still quite satisfied at the end.

We are now in the middle section of a three-part trilogy of episodes to end this series. Judging a middle section of such a trilogy (whether it be movies or something else) is a notoriously difficult thing to do. If "Say Hello to My Little Friend" was the kickoff to Michael's pursuit of what happened in the accident, then this episode serves as the escalation to those events.

This show delves into dreams and the notion of reality. Dreams tend to be extensions of whatever a person's reality is at that time. There is a warped sense of time passing when dreams are involved. I write this now because it hadn't occurred to me that it's been only six months since the accident that changed everything in Detective Britten's life. He had gotten used to his situation, comfortable enough to expect a pattern to his new life, and this episode was the first since the pilot episode really to throw a wrench into all of it.

It must be intentional on the writers' part to de-emphasize Rex and the world where he lives on instead of Hannah. He's absent yet again in this episode, and that means Michael focuses on a routine double homicide investigation. I mean, the case has a nice initial fake-out with who the intended target of the shooter was supposed to be, but it proves inconsequential to the show's overall arc.

As a long-time sports fan, I will personally admit to wondering what it would be like for games to have different outcomes. We all wonder what the opposite outcome would be. Also, I've been watching television for a long time as well and I'm well-versed in the police procedural. "Awake" dips twice into that well here once again and I am tiring of these cases that are so easy to solve.

This episode, "Awake" made full use of its police procedural format. It might be the simplest of episodes the show has aired so far. It's also one that didn't put Detective Britten in the spotlight very much. Instead, there's focus on an accountant for a Russian mobster and his wife. They suddenly need to be protected by the police when the mobster tries to kill the accountant. It's not the worst plot the writers can think of, but I constantly had the feeling of detachment with these people, probably because we're never going to see them on the series again. I also had this nagging feeling throughout that US Marshals should be protecting these people instead of the LAPD. But the episode does seem to further a theory about the show's overall story arc that has been building for some time now.

Continuing with Michael's increasing mental breakdown, the show has ventured into auditory hallucinations. Listening to instructions from a drive-thru ordering machine may be unorthodox, but that's par for the course with a show like this. It leads to a subplot that doesn't really go anywhere, and exposes the weakest part of the plot (the conspiracy) as well.

Michael's mental deterioration is accelerating at a rate that I never expected. At the very least, I thought he would grow more comfortable with the two worlds he inhabits before the rug is pulled out from under him. This episode proves that he is losing the grip he has on the situation. Being in a high-stress job like police detective doesn't help things.
