Exclusive Interview with Paul Amos of Lost GirlInterview by Jamie RubyWritten by Jamie Ruby Lost Girl follows the story of Bo (played by Anna Silk), an unaligned succubus, who refuses to choose sides, but helps both Fae kind and humans when she can, all while trying to understand who and what she really is. Paul Amos plays the character of Vex. He's a Mesmer that has the ability to control people's actions with his mind. He is Dark Fae, but also helps out the Light Fae at times, so no one is sure where his loyalties lie, other than to himself. One thing is for certain, however: Vex has a kickass wardrobe. The costumes, however, are often quite tight. "The thing about the costumes with Vex - I'm kind of a bit committed to this character; this is as far as my commitment goes - is that I have to generally Nair for those costumes. I generally have to Nair for those costumes so that tells you everything you need to know.

The third season finale of Lost Girl is a vast improvement over its counterpart from season two, and that alone is enough to win it a lot of goodwill. There were countless opportunities for the show to fall into the same traps but “Those Who Wander” gives every character an engaging storyline and moments of humour or heroism or just flat-out coolness, and it ends on a cliffhanger that suggests even better things to follow.

After a run of episodes with lacklustre storylines saved by decent to solid character beats, Lost Girl is striking back with the first part of its big third season finale. “Hail, Hale” follows the pattern of finales past, using a run of episodes to build up both the threat and whatever means Team Bo will use to finally defeat it, but in this season, it’s hard to imagine things being grimmer or the characters being more downtrodden in the face of a major threat.

There’s almost a comforting familiarity about the old Lost Girl formula, in that structure that worked pretty consistently during the first season and, despite some problems, helped the show grow and develop and latch onto its initial fanbase. Even Bo and Kenzi seem to think so in this episode as they gleefully take the opportunity to tackle an old-school case, and like most of the strongest Lost Girl episodes, it’s a pleasant-enough diversion that allows the really interesting plot elements to bubble up.

After the disappointing and anticlimactic resolution of the “dawning” ceremony, it makes sense that the writers would want to take a step back, return to the “fae of the week” roots a bit, and use character interactions and relationships to explore the changes in Bo and those around her. Some of that does take place, but it still seems far less than one could reasonably expect. After stealing her friends’ energy without their consent, shouldn’t Bo be on a shorter leash?

As much as Lost Girl has improved this season, there is a disjointed quality to the season arc. The beginning of the season was focused on relationship issues and Bo’s slow but steady loss of control. The middle of the season has been about Bo’s rite of passage as a fae, and how oddly quick the timing has been. Perhaps it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the “dawning” comes to a relative conclusion so soon, given how things have progressed.

Lost Girl has been on a roll, so it was inevitable that they would stumble again sooner or later. It’s just not that consistent a show to keep up the pace. This had the feel of an episode that had a lot of the right elements, but just couldn’t put them together. Given some of the stilted performances and pacing issues, I have to wonder if this was a bad script or a directorial misfire.

By Jamie Ruby Quite a bit has been going on this season on Lost Girl. Dyson, played by Kris Holden-Ried, has his love for Bo, played by Anna Silk, back and Kenzi, played by Ksenia Solo, had previously been kidnapped. More recently, Bo learned that she has to go through The Dawning, a right of passage that all Fae must complete. If she fails she will devolve into an Under Fae. The problem is, it's happening two hundred years ahead of schedule. With little time left to prepare, Trick (Rick Howland) has been trying to impart his knowledge to help his granddaughter through to the end. The series actors Silk, Holden-Ried, and Solo recently talked to the digital media about this season as well as the official renewal for season four.

Double the Kenzi — that’s a recipe for success, right? But it’s not just a gimmick to get us into the story, it’s one of the more intense episodes of Lost Girl we’ve seen since Bo and Kenzi took on Baba Yaga. Even the previous season’s finale didn’t come close to building this kind of tension and fear, because the threat has been built up over several episodes and we feel, for one of the first times in the series, that our protagonists are in real jeopardy.
