I’ve long said that the only way this season could make sense is if Annie’s experiences and choices were being driven by superiors for a larger purpose. My suspicion was that it had more to do with Arthur and Lena working together to investigate Jai’s death, putting Annie into something of a double-blind deep cover role. This episode makes it clear that it’s not quite that complicated, which helps maintain the integrity of some characters, while undermining others.

With the series dangerously close to hitting the dreaded reset button, I wasn't sure what to think about this episode when it started. Annie was back in the fold with Joan, butting heads with her superiors over an operation with the potential for serious repercussions. Besides Auggie being in therapy, how was this an evolution of the story?

This season of "Covert Affairs" started with a shift in perspective and approach that provided some hope that the producers and writers had seen the weaknesses within the show and were dedicated to making substantial, necessary changes. And there were plenty of hints within the first three episodes that this was a long-term strategy. So why does it feel like this episode is one big excuse to hit the reset button?

An episode that rubs salt in the wound that is the Annie/Auggie non-relationship sounds like it ought to be a step in the wrong direction for "Covert Affairs". Instead, it feels right; this is what we've come to expect from the show this season. Annie remains competent, the character dynamics remain strong, and the episode itself was gripping, to say the least.

Now that the tectonic shifts presented in the premiere have been tossed to the audience, it's time for the writers to start exploring what this new status quo actually means. As it turns out, some of the changes are less extreme than originally thought, but it still represents an opportunity for the show to gain a fresh perspective. Despite everything that has happened, of course, it would be foolish to ignore the one constant: the amazing chemistry between Annie and Auggie.

Despite some of the casting changes that had been announced during the between-season hiatus, I somehow managed to overlook the clear implication that the series was moving towards a major overhaul. So it's understandable that I wound up backtracking more than once during the course of this episode, trying to wrap my brain around the shifts in the status quo. I imagine Annie Walker was in much the same situation.
