The specter of death hangs all over this episode. Unlike last season, where the winds of change were a clear threat, death has been present at least since Lane Pryce hanged himself in the offices of SCDP. That happened almost a year ago by the show’s chronology, yet there are many overt signs present now in the premiere. It’s also interesting to me that the episode takes place at the beginning of 1968, with several characters (and even a newspaper headline) noting that the country had just gotten through a violent summer to start anew in another year. They have no idea what is in store for them. It’s going to be tumultuous, though the premiere doesn’t offer any hints of that. It will unfold as the season goes along. We’ll just be content to go along with all of the main characters on their journey through their lives and jobs. For all the talk about how the wave of change is coming, the premiere makes it feel like many of these people are at a standstill, though. That has to be a major concern going forward.

The Walking Dead is often a victim of its own source material. I mean that in the sense that fans of the ongoing comic book series want to see the characters and situations from that source material put onto the screen as faithfully as possible. Newer fans want a show that hits a lot of the same high notes, without the danger of being spoiled. And the writers want the freedom to pick and choose, while still telling their own story in familiar ground.

Being a relatively new fan of The Walking Dead, I don’t have the long-standing annoyance or dislike for the character of Andrea that the fandom at large seems to have. Part of that may be that I consumed the existing source material in a matter of days, and that version of Andrea still lingers whenever someone references the character on the show. Regardless, her character arc in this season has been fairly strong, and perhaps more to the point, all too human.

By giving the Governor a more nuanced characterization from the start, the writers for The Walking Deadmade episodes like this possible. Some viewers may not take that as a positive development, but as someone that sees this show as being about the people more than the zombies, I would strongly disagree. Rick and the Governor are engaged in a staring contest, while we see how their respective followers could, given the chance, work together perfectly well.

This episode is a great demonstration of why it’s important for shows to build some tension and some goodwill before it delves into the heavy plot mechanics. There’s more than a few similarities between “I Ain’t a Judas” and the episode that kicked off the back half of season three, but there’s also a marked difference in its character beats and strong themes, in how much we care, and in how much we’re invested in the nitty-gritty of moving a story along.

The previous instalment of The Walking Dead was a bit disappointing. Most of its attempts at drama fell flat, especially the decision to split off Daryl and Merle from the chain gang, and the only real progression of the plot was done in an awkward, jarring way that didn’t ring true. Sadly, much of “Home” follows the same trend of indulging in sideplots and character beats that don’t feel important or necessary to the main story. It’s only the very strong climax that puts the episode back on track in a big way.

It was always a bit of a mystery what kind of episode “The Walking Dead” would return with. Another big plot-driven episode like the mid-season finale? Something more intimate and emotional? Expectations were high, and maybe that’s the problem with “The Suicide King”, because it doesn’t hit any truly big notes. Most of the running time is spent getting us reacquainted with the post-apocalypse, with only a few token hints towards what kind of storytelling we might get in the future.

The midseason finale certainly has all the build-up of a big conclusion to this year's run of episodes, and the production itself seems bigger, more laboured, all designed to end with a bang and leave the audience on a big cliffhanger for next year. Yet when all's said and done, "Made to Suffer" doesn't distinguish itself too much from the average episode of "The Walking Dead". It's excellent, yes, but other than a few isolated moments, it doesn't make the final push into true brilliance.
