SciFi Vision - Where Fiction and Reality Meet
Game of Thrones 3.9 Review: “The Rains of Castamere”
By John Keegan and Gregg Wright
“The Red Wedding”. Ice and Fire readers dreaded it (or anticipated it, I suppose). Unsuspecting viewers were shocked by it. Other stuff happened in the episode, but there’s really no talking about any of that until I’ve gotten my thoughts on that final scene out of the way. Given that it’s easily the most shocking moment of the show (perhaps even the most shocking television moment I’ve ever experienced), it’s not surprising that the reaction to it has been heavily polarizing. Fans of the books seem generally pleased with how it was handled in the show. It was probably a smart move to bring in veteran television director David Nutter to helm this episode, and he does so with considerable skill.

By John Keegan and Gregg Wright
It is with great reluctance that I write this final review for Merlin. For most people, the show ended as soon as the credits roll, but it doesn’t really feel like it’s over for me until I’ve written this review. But the show really is over, although I have heard talk of a possible spin-off. I don’t quite know what to make of that, but I’ll speculate a bit more about that later. Right now, let’s talk about the finale itself. I’ll begin by comparing my expectations for the finale with the reality of it.

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys
Once Upon A Time concludes its second season with two episodes linked in title, but wildly divergent in quality. They serve as a microcosm of the whole uneven season, and confirm a trend that became apparent in the latter part of the season. Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are very comfortable crafting stories for this wild, wacky, throw-ideas-at-the-wall-until-something-sticks world they’ve created. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to bring the rest of the writers room on board, which really is part of their job description.

By John Keegan
Grimm is a series that must constantly struggle with the needs of production (staying in “Portland”) while telling what has become a story about a global struggle. Sooner or later, they were going to have to get Nick out of town to deal with the bigger picture, so I suppose this is one way to do it. It’s a lot easier to have Nick be taken indoors and simply tell the audience you are in Europe. (Alas, Covert Affairsdoesn’t have that luxury.)

By John Keegan and Edmund Boys
The first season of Person of Interest set a high bar for season-ending arcs, pulling its various characters and plot threads together in unexpected ways. The second season finale faces a different challenge. With the main players out in the open, there is little opportunity for a stunner like Root’s reveal. The surprises have to come from the plot machinations, and again, the show delivers.

By John Keegan
I did a terrible job of reading the tea leaves when it came to the season finales of Arrow andSupernatural, so I’m a little thankful that I was able to see where they were going with a few of the bigger moments of this finale. The Vampire Diaries has always known how to deliver a solid season ender, and while this doesn’t hit the same high notes as the third season finale, it’s still a great way to set the next story arc in motion.

By John Keegan
Not only does this episode share a title with the season finale of Arrow, but it also follows roughly the same pattern. After spending a great deal of the finale more or less maintaining the apparent course of the season arc and all the foreshadowing throughout recent episodes, the writers take a left turn into a very different direction. Things on Supernatural look like they could be very different in the ninth season.

By John Keegan
I love it when a season finale seems to be bringing the story arc to the predictable conclusion, and things take a surprising turn. In this case, I was expecting Oliver and Malcolm Merlyn to fight to the death, while Oliver’s allies prevented “The Undertaking”. And for a while, that’s what seemed like would happen. And then I was pleasantly surprised.

By Jamie Ruby
NBC has a new singing competition, but it's different than the rest. The Winner Is is the only competition where singing just six songs can win a contestant one million dollars. The series is a mix of both a singing competition as well as a game show. During the rounds, contestants have a choice to take smaller amounts of cash or to continue on and hope to win a spot in the finale and a chance at the million.
The Winner Is is hosted by Nick Lachey. NBC will air sneak peeks of the series on Mondays, June 10 and June 17, with the series premiering on July 11, and subsequent episodes airing on Thursdays.
Lachey recently talked to the media in anticipation of the new competition coming to NBC.
