2012 Movie Recall

By Daniel Denehy

2012 Movie Recall

The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneyWithout a doubt, 2012 was one of the best years of movies in a long time, particularly if you're a fan of sci-fi and fantasy. We saw the end of franchises, the start of new ones, and even the catalyst for an entire new way of telling stories on the big screen. Unfortunately, what was a fantastic year had to come to a close, and though there are a good deal of promising movies coming out in 2013, here in the first few months we are left in the film industry's slow season. There aren't too many quality films in theaters right now, and we here at SciFi Vision thought it would be a good idea to bring up some movies from this past year that didn't get reviewed. We wish to encourage you to go back, and enjoy some movies that you may have missed or were unsure about. Of course, some of these may be on DVD now, but at least a couple are still in theaters for those of you who enjoy the movie-going experience. Now sit back, grab some munchies, and remember the following six movies, they may save you from boredom in these trying times.

DVD Review: "Atlas Shrugged: Part II"

Atlas Shrugged: Part IIBefore watching Atlas Shrugged Part II, I decided to watch the first film, and I watched them back to back. One thing to be noted is that the two films, although revolving around the same characters, have completely different casts, which felt very disjointed. The story is one overall all arch, and while they are two separate films, if you don't watch the first you miss a large chunk of the story. I believe that you could follow Part II without having seen its predecessor and still understand it, but I don't think it would have the same impact. Everything that happens in Part II is fueled by Part I:

Who is John Galt? That's the mystery that's woven throughout the films as the best and the brightest start disappearing, and is also used as a saying when one doesn't know an answer to something they are asked.

The main characters of the films are the protagonist Dagny Taggart, played by Samantha Mathis (Taylor Schilling in Part I) and her love interest Henry "Hank" Reardon, played by Jason Beghe (Grant Bowler in Part I). While there is a love story, it takes a backseat to all of the problems that they and the country are facing. The story starts in a dystopian United States (Part I starts in 2016, Part II does not specify) during an economic depression. Prices have skyrocketed and with the cost of fuel and oil rising, the predominant form of travel has become rail transportation, but even the railways are in need of repair.

Exclusive: Shawn Carter Peterson is Wes in Meyer's "The Host"

Shawn Carter PetersonIn the upcoming film The Host, based on the book by Stephenie Meyer (The Twlight Saga), a race of aliens have taken over the earth by taking over people's minds, but not everyone is willing to give up so easily. One "soul," Wanderer (a.k.a. Wanda) takes over Melanie Stryder (played by Saoirse Ronan), but she refuses to let go and they form a bond over the love (Max Irons) she left behind. As Wanda starts to share many of Melanie's feelings and emotions, her views change, and she decides to aid other humans who remain, in their fight against her kind.

One of these remaining humans is the character of Wes, played by Shawn Carter Peterson, who recently talked to Jamie Ruby of SciFi Vision in an exclusive interview about the film. "Wes is one of a group of human beings that remain on Earth once the earth has been taken over by an alien invasion, if you will. And the aliens take over human bodies so you can't really tell who's human and who's not. The only way you can tell is by a silver ring that's around the cornea of the eye. And there is a small group of humans that have remained human and are hiding out in caves out in the desert, and Wes is one of those people."

Chasing Mavericks on Blu-ray & DVD 2/26

Chasing Mavericks

Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of real life surfing phenom Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston).  When 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson (played by Gerard Butler) to train him to survive it.  As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than surfing. Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the most mind-blowing real wave footage ever captured on film.

Early Review: "End of the World" - Delightfully Different & Funny

By Jamie Ruby

End of the WorldEnd of the World, Syfy's newest original disaster movie, premieres tomorrow night. The film is somewhat different from the usual fair. Many of the Syfy Saturday originals are campy, whether they are meant to be or not, but this one is different. It's the ultimate disaster movie to end all disaster movies, almost a spoof of the genre, if you will. And it's really funny, paying homage to science fiction and disaster movie fans everywhere.

The film revolves around two such fan boys, played by Neil Grayston and Greg Grunberg, who work at a video store. Their world is turned upside down when their small town becomes a disaster of its own, with plasma rain that causes power surges and reduces people to ash.

Beautiful Creatures: Great Film, No So Great Adaptation

Beautiful CreaturesNote from the author: This time I did something much different with the review. I wanted to include the changes in the film from the book since parts of it were so different.

Although I discuss some of these changes in the review I decided to include the major plot changes after the main part of the article so that fans of the book can read the differences, yet moviegoers won't be spoiled if they don't want to be, nor bored reading about things that only happened in the book. The section is marked after the review.

Valentine's Day marks the opening of a few different films this year, including Beautiful Creatures, which technically opened with a 10pm showing last night across the country as opposed to midnight. Knowing from trailers that I really wanted to see the film, I opted to get the book that the film was based on, written by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, before I saw it (and loved it, I'm on the last book in the series now). Doing that can sometimes give you different expectations.

As a film, it was well crafted and I definitely enjoyed it, though I admit spent a large portion of the movie comparing it to the book and questioning why some parts were changed – a lot (see below).

The overall story was the same: a Mortal (Ethan Wate, played by Alden Ehrenreich) and Caster (i.e. witch) fall in love but can't be together because of their circumstances. The girl, Lena (Alice Englert), is about to turn 16 and will be Claimed for either the Light or the Dark, regardless of choice.
