"Sleeper" Coming to Blu-ray 1/15

Sleeper

Drawing on the great tradition of silent comedy, Sleeper is Woody Allen’s first film to tame his verbal wit and showcase his emerging skill with visual and physical comedy. Starring Diane Keaton (directed by Allen for the first time), Sleeper is “a bizarre mixture of New York neuroses, splendidly lunatic sight gags, Alice-in-Wonderland illogic, and too-funny-to-be-painful satire” (Los Angeles Herald-Examiner)!

DVD Review: "Ruby Sparks"

By Jamie Ruby

Ruby SparksRuby Sparks stars Paul Dano as Calvin Weir-Fields, a struggling novelist who after finding fame as a teenager, now has writers' block. To kickstart his creativity, his therapist (Elliot Gould) tells him he should write about someone who would love his dog the way he is, timid and slobbery. So Calvin starts writing about a young woman, Ruby Sparks, and unwittingly ends up falling in love with her, which he thinks is a problem, because she's not real.

The more he writes, the more real she becomes, until her underthings start showing up and he sees her in his apartment. He freaks out, assuming he's had some kind of mental breakdown, but soon realizes that other people can see her too, and that he controls her with his writing.

The film is in much part about loving someone for who they are and accepting all their faults. Calvin learns that trying to change someone can have costs, as the more he controls her, the less she is the woman he fell in love with, and that love is often complicated, but that's what makes it real.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D: Oh There Were Revelations Alright

Silent Hill: Revelation 3DI'm not even sure where to start with this one. If you're one of my regular readers you know that I don't condemn or spoil movies in my reviews. Even though I'm quite tempted to rant, and do both of those things, I will refrain myself. I suppose I'll have to start with what I thought of the original Silent Hill.

Much like with Doom, I've heard a lot of fans of the games Silent Hill 2 & 3, (apparently there's never been another good one,) say that they hate the movie for not being like the games enough. I can understand that, but overall I like the first movie. Silent Hill may have suffered from strong-woman-protagonist-is-strong-because-she-acts-like-an-insert-favorite-explitive-here, but otherwise was a pretty well-written horror movie with a more complex narrative than the usual, ghost is mad in a dark place and kills a handful of teenagers. Granted, as I've explained before, I am not a horror fan, but I typically include Silent Hill in the horror movies that I enjoy.
