Spanish Audition is a First for "The Voice"

This week Julio Cesar Castillo became the first contestant in The Voice to sing his audition number in Spanish. He chose “La Bamba,” the Mexican folk song popularized Richie Valens back in the 1950s. Although the song is well known to American ears, it was still a risky move.
“You have to take a risk to stand out,” explained Castillo in an interview the day after the show. “I just went for it. So I'm glad I got the results I did and I'm glad I did it.”
The risk paid off, as Blake Shelton spun his chair almost immediately and was followed later by Cee Lo. Before choosing a coach, Castillo told them of his love for mariachi, a form of Mexican folk music, and Cee Lo invited him to sing a bit.
He fell in love with mariachi around the age of six. “I started listening to music because of my parents and my grandparents,” he explained, “and it’s part of my roots. “And ever since I was young, I had a feeling that that type of music was something I wanted to get into, which I did and I'm still into.”
Is it something he'd like to try on The Voice?
“I’d definitely like to try it on the show. I'm not sure what America’s reaction would be,” mused Castillo, “but like I said before, it’s good to take risks sometimes. And sometimes, the outcome’s even better than you imagined.”
Before the night was over, Castillo and country singer Casey Meussigmann signed up for Team Blake while Adriana Louise got all four judges to turn and joined the one-named Aquile on Team Christina. Mackenzie Bourg chose Cee Lo as his coach and Adam Levine went home empty handed.

Friday, September 21, the NCLR ALMA Awards will return to NBC. The star-studded event for Hispanic Heritage Month will for the third time be hosted by Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) and George Lopez (Take Me Out). The show celebrates the achievements of Latinos in the entertainment industry. The 2012 NCLR ALMA Awards will be produced by Dick Clark Productions' executive producers Orly Adelson and Barry Adelman as well as Longoria and Janet Murguia. Murguia is currently the president and CEO of NCLR (National Council of La Raza).
Longoria, Lopez, Murguia, and Adelman recently talked to the media about the upcoming special event.

The Voice: Nelly's Echo Shines

The Voice’s second night of blind auditions brought another group of impressive performers and winning personalities, none more engaging than Nelson “Nelly’s Echo” Emokpae. A native of Nigeria, Nelly was the highlight of the evening, impressing the judges with his rendition of Bill Withers’ "Ain't No Sunshine" and with his personal story.
Sixteen years ago, when Nelly was just 15, his family fled political persecution in Nigeria but were forced to leave his imprisoned father behind. They settled in Baltimore, where thankfully the father eventually joined them. Although it was in Baltimore that Nelly developed his musical talent, his African roots have been a great influence.
“I’m a product of different cultures and geographies,” he explained, “so it allows me to sound like everything you’ve heard but nothing [you’ve heard]. And also coming from where I came from in Nigeria, it allows me to draw from that and gives me strength to go through the tough times you go through as a musician in this business.”
While fans compare Nelly’s Echo to Seal or Sting, he credits a number of Nigerian influences including the legendary Fela as well as newer artists such as P-Square and 2Face.

The Voice: a Familiar Face Returns

Last season on The Voice, Daniel Rosa didn’t make it past the blind auditions. When none of the judges turned around, he asked what he could do better, and they suggested he work on his pitch.
Rosa took the advice to heart and when the Voice powers-that-be invited him back to try again in season three, he was ready.
“The greatest thing that ever could have happened to me,” he says, “was to not make it on the show last season. I was very inspired to move on.
“I needed a lot of work. I learned that I needed to trust myself. I knew that I needed to work on my stage presence. I still do,” confesses Rosa, who admits that this week’s episode was the first time he had ever performed with a mic in his hand.
“I was terrified holding that microphone, so I didn't last season and this time I did. So it was really liberating.”
It wasn’t just Rosa’s new-found poise and confidence that drew notice; his arrangement of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” caught the attention of Cee Lo and Blake, both of whom spun their chairs and made a play to add him to their teams. But the real highlight was seeing all four judges’ obvious delight in Rosa’s return.
In the end, Rosa went with Team Cee Lo, and he looks forward to the battle rounds.
“I don't know what I'm going to bring to this next season,” he muses. “I just know that last season helped me so much to get here so I feel like a completely different person from last season. So I think that's really going to help me through.”
Cee Lo also added R&B singer Trevin Hunte while Adam selected Bryan Keith and Joe Kirkland. Christina went with Devyn DeLoera and De'Borah. The big winner was Blake, who snagged two of the most telented singers of the evening, Scottish rocker Terry McDermott and yodeler Gracia Harrison.

The premiere episode, "The Future in the Past," picks up three months after it left off - Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) is still on the run, a murder suspect staying out of sight. After the real murderer, Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds), digitally created evidence of her guilt, there seemed to be no way out. Meanwhile Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and the rest of the team must do everything in their power to find the proof of his misdeeds to clear her name.
The creator and executive producer of Bones talked to Jamie Ruby in an exclusive interview for SciFi Vision, expanding on what was said in the conference call earlier in the day.

Season two of The X Factor returns on Wednesday, September 12, for the first half of a two-night premiere which continues the following night on Fox. This season Judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid are joined by two new judges - pop icon Britney Spears and the talented singer Demi Lovato. Together they will search for the next solo artist or vocal group who has the "x factor." The winner wll receive a massive $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music.

Rose, Bryant, Balfour, & Lloyd Segan Talk Haven Season 3

Syfy's series Haven, loosely based on Stephen King's The Colorado Kid, revolves around Audrey Parker (Emily Rose), an FBI agent who comes to the town of Haven and helps the local authorities (Sheriff Nathan Wuornos played by Lucas Bryant) deal with people with the "troubles." People who are afflicted with the troubles usually either have some kind of ability or curse that either affects them or those around them, often without being able to control it, and quite a lot of times without their knowledge.
Audrey recently found out that she is not who she thinks, but actually Lucy (and before that Sarah) who has no memory of her true past, only that it is somehow connected to the Colorado Kid murder.
This season Audrey will follow the clues to find out who she really is and why she keeps coming back to Haven, all while struggling with her relationship with Nathan as well as her feelings for the third member of the love triangle, Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour).

Jason Hawes on "Ghost Hunters" Season 8.5

Ghost Hunters returns on September 5th with season 8.5 on Syfy. The mid-season premiere is the first episode without co-leader Grant Wilson and the episodes have other noticeable changes. Ghost Hunters is shot differently than previous seasons. A Jason Hawes narrative is weaved into the show and some of the findings are dropped into the investigation. This season's changes seem influenced by other current paranormal programming.
The Syfy press release described the Ghost Hunters TAPS team as, "officially a team in transition, which means there are plenty of surprises on the way this fall!" One of the surprises was given away on a conference call with founder and lead investigator, Jason Hawes, on August 28th. Jason exclusively announced on the press conference call that a new female investigator, Ashley Troub of East Ventura Paranormal Society (EVPs), has joined the Ghost Hunters team. I have met and investigated with Ashley previously. Ashley will bring a new energy to the TAPS team. On September 26th, Ashley will make her first appearance on Ghost Hunters.
