***The following is a detailed recap of episode 401 of FROM, “The Arrival,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

The episode opens where the season finale ended, with Julie having watched her father get his throat sliced by the Man in Yellow. He questions that no one told her there’s no way to change a story once it’s been told and turns towards Jim. When he turns back, she’s gone. He tells Jim it’s a shame he won’t get to see what happens next, because it’s his favorite part and asks if he’d like to know why.

A car with Alabama plates pulls up to a fallen tree, and a pastor gets out and looks around and then gets back in the car.

Ellis and Boyd ask Fatima more about what she found out, and she tells them that she knows the monsters sacrificed their children and that they were people once. They made a bargain with something horrible, but she didn’t see what it was. They tell her they need to get out of there, but she doesn’t want to leave Boyd, who had followed the woman in the kimono into the tunnels. Kenny says he will find him, and Ellis helps her up as Kenny heads down the stairs and into the cave.

In the caves Kenny runs into Boyd, who immediately tells him that they have to get out of there, however, it’s too late, as a bloody Smiley has come up behind him. He tells Kenny that it’s nice to see him again. Boyd yells at Kenny to move and they make it back up the steps and shut the trap door. Kenny is confused, because he knows they burned his body. Boyd tells him how he watched Fatima’s baby grow and stand up and smile.

Kristi comes up the stairs of Colony House asking Donna what’s going on. Meanwhile, Sara is sitting there when Donna asks if she has heard from Boyd, which she hasn’t. She tells her she’s going to go, because people are coming, and she leaves.

Donna takes Kristi to Elgin, but they open the door to Acosta holding a gun on them. Donna tells her to put it away; Kristi’s there to help. When Kristi asks what happened, Donna tells her that “Sara took his eye out with a screwdriver. She had reasons.” She asks if Kristi can stitch him up, and she tells Donna that she will do her best.

Clara tries to come in but they push her back out.

The Man in Yellow digs up a suitcase.

The pastor's car heads towards town.

At the sheriff’s station, Boyd takes a metal case from under the floor. Inside are bullets from every gun that’s come through town, which he starts to count. He tells Kenny that if push comes to shove, they need to have enough, and he needs a headcount. Boyd says they’ve only had one win (killing Smiley). What they saw now means that there is no way to fight back against them. He emotionally says that the day may come when the only thing they decide is how to choose to leave; he just needs to make sure there are enough. Kenny tells him there are 47 people in the town.

Kristi has iced Elgin’s face. He says that she must think he is an awful person. She tells him that she might have at one time but now thinks the place does bad things to good people. She uses numbing spray on him. She asks Acosta to help her by holding him still. He tells her that once the baby was born, they were supposed to go home and that if Fatima is back, maybe it will work out. Kristi gives him a reality check, telling him that something lied to him. He’s not the first person it’s happened to, and he probably won’t be the last. There is no working this out. She stitches up his eye.

Tabitha walks through the woods and around the graveyard back to her kids and asks where their father is, but he’s not back yet. Julie thought he was with her, but she tells her that they got separated. Her mother pretends everything is fine, but Julie knows something is wrong. Tabitha wants to take them home, but before she can, the pastor’s car comes out of nowhere and crashes into the makeshift police station. Boyd pulls Kenny out of the way in time.

Tabitha tells Ethan to stay with his sister and tries to help. Boyd and Kenny run outside, and Boyd checks the unconscious pastor, saying that he has a strong pulse. His daughter, Sophia, is trapped with a piece of metal against her neck. Boyd tells the others standing around watching to get the ambulance and tells Kenny to grab some tools from the shed, because they might have to take the door apart. Tabitha puts the Bible between Sophia’s neck and the metal so she doesn't keep getting cut. Sophia keeps yelling for her father, and they reassure her that he’s okay. Boyd cuts her seatbelt so he can get her out.

Kenny grabs some tools and sees Jade along the way and brings him back with him to help. Marielle also shows up with the ambulance and checks the pastor. Randall and another person bring the stretcher for him.

Tabitha and Marielle talk to Sophia while Boyd continues to try to pry open the driver’s side door. At the ambulance, Marielle asks Sophia if her father was acting strange. She tells her that they came to the tree, and he tried to go around it when he started shaking. She tried to steer the car but couldn’t.

Randall tells them they should use a winch. Julie joins in as Victor and Ethan and the others watch. Note that Victor seems to be counting something (perhaps the days?). Using the winch, they finally get the pastor out and onto the stretcher.

Marielle tells Boyd that she thinks the man had a seizure: she’s not sure what’s medically wrong with him, after all, Elgin had one, and it’s not uncommon in the town. Boyd agrees, mentioning Sara’s seizure. She says to bring him to the clinic, and they can hope he wakes up. Kenny says he will go with them to the clinic, telling Boyd that someone should be there with Sophia, whereas he needs to see Fatima and his son.

Jade tells Tabitha they need to talk. She tells the kids to go inside. He wants to tell people what happened, but she isn’t sure it was real. He asks if it felt real, and she says that Sara tried to kill Ethan because something convinced her they could all go home, and she’s sure that felt real too. Jade tells her it’s different this time. She asks him which is easier to believe, that whatever is keeping them there put thoughts in their heads to torture them or that they’ve been coming back over and over again for centuries trying to save children that are already dead. Jade says the two of them and Jim can talk, but she tells him Jim’s not back yet, but when he is, he can talk to him.

Acosta comes out of Colony House and Boyd tries to talk to her about what happened earlier. She screams at him to get his hands off of her and that she’s not going back in there with him. She asks if he thinks he’s some kind of hero or a martyr who did what he had to do but tells him that he’s not; he’s a monster. She says she doesn’t know what he was before, but that's what he is now, all of them are.

Donna comes down the stairs of Colony House as Boyd comes in. He says he will stay the night if it’s all right. Donna tells him that Kristi is upstairs with Fatima having finished with Elgin, and that they need to talk about what they are going to do with him. He agrees but tells her there is something she needs to hear first and to come upstairs.

Acosta goes into the diner and into the back. She tries washing something, perhaps blood, out of her uniform and gets very agitated. Then the radio starts to play “Send in the Clowns.” She picks up some kind of clothing from the ground.

Kristi asks Fatima if there is anything she can tell her about the birth. Fatima, upset, asks her if she wants to know about the terrifying woman in the kimono that held her down or what she pulled out of her that Kristi said wasn’t there.

Boyd comes in and tells Kristi to stay; he wants her to hear what he has to say too. He tells them all that by the time he caught up to the woman with the kimono, she was in a chamber with the other monsters from the woods, and they were all standing in a circle. She was holding the “baby” and put it in the center of the room where it started to move and then started to grow. It kept growing until it got big enough to stand, and then, it smiled. Fatima questions that she gave birth to one of them, but Boyd tells her not just that, it’s the one he killed that night at the clinic.

Suddenly, there is a crashing sound and Donna goes to check it out. Victor is trying to move a bed into his room, because his father is moving in with him.

Donna returns and they continue the conversation. Boyd says that if Kenny hadn’t seen it as well he would have thought he lost his mind. He says that Kenny said Fatima said something important and he wants to hear it. She says she saw just a glimpse, but she thinks she saw what the things in the woods did, how they became what they are. They made a bargain, because something promised them that they would live forever. She couldn't see with whom. She gets upset when Boyd presses her for more and says she needs a shower. She then says that she told all of them something was inside her and begged them to listen. She doesn’t understand exactly what she saw or why, and there is nothing else she can tell them.

Sophia is at her father’s bedside praying for him when Kenny asks Marielle what the chance is he will wake up. She says that given how long he’s been out that it’s not so much if as what kind of shape he will be in when he does. She leaves when Sophia comes to talk to Kenny.

Sophia asks if they have a phone as she wants to call her mother and left hers in the car. Kenny tells her there is no service there and that they need to have a talk about this place and the tree she saw in the road.

Julie is getting upset that it is getting dark and her father isn’t back yet. Tabitha just keeps saying he will be back and that everything is fine, but Julie knows something is wrong and tries to get her mother to open up, but she won’t talk to her about it. Ethan gets upset, telling them to stop yelling at each other, and asks if their father is dead. Tabitha says no and that he is probably elsewhere, and they will see him the next day. Julie tells him to remember what their father said to them the night their mom went to the bottle tree and didn’t come home. All they have in this place is what they believe, so they have to believe good things. After all, their mother came home, so their dad will too.

Kenny tells Sophia about the monsters and she asks about the talisman. He tells her that it has to be hung up but admits he doesn’t know why. She quotes John 1:5 to him: “Light shines in the darkness and darkness shall not overcome it.” She says that it means that God is with them even there; how else does he explain such a magical thing to keep the darkness at bay? She asks him to pray with her, and although he is not religious, he agrees.

Fatima takes a shower in her clothes.

Donna tells Boyd that there are a lot of people wanting to know what happened down there. He just tells her about the car that crashed and that the father, a pastor, had a stroke or seizure or something and crashed into the sheriff’s station. He says that the girl can’t be more than 15 or 16, and now she's waiting to see if her dad lives while Kenny explains that whatever life she had before is over now: they are in a place where monsters smile. Boyd says she likely will die there. He says that the only thing that gets him out of bed in the morning is the idea that maybe they can beat the place and all get home someday, that maybe the good guys actually win. However, after he saw what he saw in the tunnels, he realized that they were three steps ahead of them, and like Donna previously said, the game is rigged. It doesn’t matter what they do or sacrifice. Nothing matters. Kristi yells at him, saying that he doesn’t get to feel sorry for himself. They all have reasons for that, but no one else is asking her to stitch up someone’s eye socket, so she needs more from him than monsters live forever, and they’re all going to die. She tells him that it doesn’t matter how many people she stitches back together, but if they see him lose faith, then that’s when people start hanging themselves in the bathroom. Ellis tells them to give him and his father a second, and when they do, he tells him that Kristi is right. Boyd just says he can’t do it anymore; he’s falling apart. After everything they’ve done, every sacrifice they’ve made, if he can’t get him home, then none of it matters; it can’t be for nothing. Ellis hugs Boyd.

The Matthews hear something from the kitchen and find the pot spilled on the floor. Suddenly, a book flies off the table and cupboards slam open and shut on their own.

Once Kenny is asleep, Sophia goes over to her father. She commands him to wake up, and he does. She tells him that she knows it’s confusing, but it’s important he understands that he played a very special role in a very important story. She says that she couldn’t have come to them as she was, not with everything they’ve learned. We see flashbacks of the Man in Yellow, who opens the suitcase with Sophia’s dress inside and starts to undress. Nude, his bones start cracking as he changes shape and eventually becomes Sophia. She tells the pastor she knows what’s happening to him isn’t fair to him and that she knows he helped her out of kindness.

The scene shows he met her along the road when she said she was lost and he gave her a ride. She put her hand on his chest and he started to seize. She grabbed the wheel, making it crash.

Back in the present, she tells him that she knows he must be afraid and she’s sorry that he won’t be there to see what comes next, as it is always her favorite part that she wishes could last forever. She asks if he would like to know why and then says it’s because this is when they tear themselves apart. She then covers his nose and mouth with her hand and gleefully suffocates him.
