***The following is a detailed recap of the season three finale of FROM, “Revelations: Chapter Two,” and it contains spoilers for the episode.***

Tonight, FROM closed out the third season as promised answering big questions. The episode was fast-paced but also left a lot of time for emotional character scenes.

The search for Fatima is of course the main part of the story. I was glad that Ellis picked up on Elgin’s deception right away. I still wonder though that Elgin, since he does seem to be such a nice guy, didn’t at all question what he was doing or that it could hurt Fatima. At least Sara didn’t want to kill Ethan, regardless that she tried to. Elgin almost seems to be under a spell.

I was really surprised that Boyd went through with torturing Elgin to find out Fatima’s location. I appreciated that Father Khatri showed up to attempt to get him to think it through, regardless of whether he’s actually in Boyd’s mind or not. I’m honestly not sure if Boyd can come back after this. He really in my opinion crossed a line and is completely unraveling. What surprised me more though was that so many people stood by and let it happen, especially Kenny and Donna. I expected them to try to stop Boyd. Regardless, the scenes were very powerful and I found it almost hard to watch, because Harold Perrineau is so brilliantly scary in the scenes. In this instance, when Acosta (Dani!) comes into Colony House, she is the voice of reason, and I think it’s also super important that she stands up to Boyd when no one else does. In the end though I loved that Sara took over and what she said to Elgin. She really believes it’s too late for her, and I do believe she really was trying to protect Boyd. I also enjoyed the previous foreshadowing of what she did to Elgin. As soon as she picked up the screwdriver, I remembered Jade’s vision of the man with the railroad spike through his eye and knew that’s where it was going. So many things in this town are cyclical. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that something similar happened to him in the past.

Another very powerful scene includes the side story of Victor and his father. I found myself openly crying at this scene. Scott McCord is as usual fantastic and does such a wonderful job here of showing the grief he’s carried at not only having found his mother’s body, but also being the one to have to bury her. Him saying that his father should just pretend he died too is heartbreaking. A possible silver lining though, I don’t believe Eloise is actually dead since he was not absolute on her body.

Jade and Tabitha’s storyline is of course the other side of the episode. It was great to get the answer to the numbers in the bottle tree. I still wonder if the fact that Boyd had a number with him when he went into the faraway tree controlled when he went to and perhaps it was just a coincidence that it was one of the same numbers as in the tree.

We already had pretty much been told in the previous episode that Tabitha and Jade were reincarnated, but it was nice to see it outright said so there was no doubt. (I do question why Jade’s visions have been different than Tabitha’s, however). These scenes are also heartbreaking though, to learn that one of the children was Miranda and Christopher’s (or belonged to their original selves, this part is unclear). It makes me worry though that they might lose hope next season, because they have tried over and over and were unable to save the children, so why will this time be different? They are going to have to do something different to make a change.

Fatima explaining that the monsters sacrificed the children because “it” told them they could live forever is a big reveal, although we are left to wonder what “it” is. I also question if they were tricked like the town has tricked the residents many times, and they never actually expected immortality to turn them literally into monsters to receive it. I’m assuming that Miranda and Christopher refused to partake, which is why they are reincarnated instead each cycle.

Having Fatima’s baby become Smiley was such a shock. If you think about it, it does make sense in a way since the baby grew so fast. It also proves that these creatures really do live forever in a way, and it also makes them more deadly. I’m glad Boyd saw the truth, and I’m excited to see the fallout when he tells everyone what he witnessed.

The final shock is of course with Jim and the Man and Yellow. People have been speculating on the Man in Yellow for awhile. I have to assume he is not a normal creature like the rest, because he was out during the daytime. Is he just the leader of the nightmare monsters? Is he the head entity that controls all of the creatures of the town? I think it’s also very possible he is the “it” that gave them immortality. Regardless, it is confirmed that he is who Jim talked to on the radio, so at least that was answered before Jim was killed.

It’s also significant that Julie apparently traveled back again to try to save her father from the future, and we now can assume that Ethan was right: she can’t change what already happened.

All in all, I absolutely loved the finale. It was a bit chaotic, but in the best way possible. I was surprised that the episode actually gave as many answers as it did, even if it did open up more questions. I honestly cannot wait until season four.

• We got a look at the Man in Yellow and know he is different from the other monsters
• Who talked to Jim on the radio
• What Acosta’s first name is
• Why Victor thinks Eloise is dead
• Julie can’t actually change the past (unconfirmed)

RECAP

Boyd is looking at a map telling Kenny where they last saw Fatima, at the shack. They have people covering the whole area in and around town, so they have a couple of places left to look. Kenny asks why she was out at the shack, but before he has to say anything, Ellis comes in saying he thinks Elgin knows where Fatima is.

Fatima is down in the root cellar heavily pregnant. She is in pain. She opens her dress. Something is moving under the skin of her stomach. She screams.

Ellis tells them that Elgin said she was fine and that this was all important. He was so calm about it and told him he shouldn’t be afraid. Ellis says that he doesn’t know if he just snapped or someone was actually talking to him. Boyd asks where he is now. Ellis tells him he’s at Colony House. Boyd tells them both to go there and not let Elgin leave.

Ethan asks his father if he thinks they found Fatima yet, and he says he hopes so. Victor comes out of the house and tells Ethan his mother fell down. Jim rushes in and asks what happened. She says she’s okay. Victor tells Ethan he saw the Boy in White, but he wasn’t very helpful. Julie comes out and tells Ethan they are going to the diner while their parents talk. He asks Victor if he wants to come, but he says no.

Tabitha tells Jim that the girl led them to the root cellar. Victor was there; he was upset and remembered something about his mother the night she left. When she hugged him, she felt like Miranda was there. She doesn’t know how to explain it, but she could feel her in the room. Then she took her back to the night it happened, the night she left her children and went to the tree. She tells him it was more than a vision. Somehow Miranda was there trying to tell her something.

Jim comes into the bar to talk to Jade and tells him he is going to want to hear what he has to say. Jade tells him that he’s heard enough. Jim apologizes for the day before and tells him that he’s scared things are happening to his family that he doesn’t know how to protect them from, but the truth is, he thinks Jade might.

Boyd comes into the church. Sara is sitting inside. He says he thought she might be there. He wants her to come up to Colony House with him. On the way, he tells her that Elgin has been acting strange. Boyd says that Ellis told him Elgin had been under stress, plus he was close with Tilly, so what happened to her might have caused it. He told Ellis that Fatima and the baby would be the reason they all get to go home. He asks her if that sounds familiar. She asks what he needs her to do. He wants her to talk to Elgin and make him understand that if he is really talking to someone there, their intentions aren’t good. She of all people understand that. Donna comes out as they walk up to Colony House. She asks what’s going on. Ellis and Kenny are inside saying Elgin can’t leave. He asks her where Acosta is, and Donna says she is still out looking for Fatima. Donna says she came back to see if anyone found anything. Boyd asks how many people are inside, and she says just a few, because they are still out searching. He tells her he wants her to clear the house.

Tabitha tells Jade what she saw and says that when Miranda got to the tree, she was so close, but one of the things came from the woods and smiled and she watched her die. Jim questions that Jade’s had visions before, but he says they weren’t like that. When he sees them it’s like he’s seeing something that shouldn’t be there. Jade says the day he saw the civil war soldier, it’s not like he was back there. This is different. Jade questions Tabitha thought that Miranda was trying to tell her something. Tabitha says she knows she sounds crazy, but Jade says he doesn’t, not there anyway. He says that the first law of thermodynamics is that energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only change from one form to another. He says that their thoughts, their memories, their souls, if you believe in that sort of thing, they’re made of energy. Maybe here that energy lingers. Since the creepy girl led her to the root cellar, he says that whatever Miranda showed her, those kids wanted her to see it. He asks where she was, and she tells him she was at Victor’s truck.

Elgin is preparing to leave but is stopped by Boyd who says he wants to talk to him. Donna says they can go to her room. Sara, Ellis, and Kenny follow as well. Boyd tells Elgin to sit down. He tells Kenny to watch the door for him, so Kenny goes out of the room. Boyd says to Elgin that it looks like he packed supplies for a couple of days and asks where he was going, but he doesn’t answer. Boyd tells him he’s going to ask him something, and he wants him to tell him the truth. He asks if he knows where Fatima is. Elgin says that “she” told him not to say anything. He knows how much they all care about her. He says that when Ellis told him about his mother, he couldn’t even imagine what he’s going through. Elgin says that he wants to help, not to hurt anyone, but what’s happening is a good thing. Donna asks who told him not to say anything. He says he knows it sounds crazy, but he thinks it’s an angel there to help them. Elgin tells them that something happening beyond their ability to understand. He continues that back in the Bible people didn’t understand, but had faith, especially when it was hard. He says that Fatima’s baby is going to save all of them. Boyd says that he needs him to listen – there is no baby. Kristi and Marielle did an ultrasound and there was nothing on the image. Whatever is growing inside her isn’t a child. He mentions the things done to her and the things it made her do. Elgin says that she explained all of that to him. Sara tells him that the day they met she told him she killed her brother and asks if he knows why. She tells him that the voice told her if she killed a little boy they would all get to go home. She says that this place, it doesn’t give; it takes. He questions that she doesn’t see how this is different. No one is dying; she will be fine. Ellis says that he doesn’t know that. Elgin just says that once the baby is born, they all get to go home. Donna says that even if Fatima is pregnant, she’s still months way. He tells her she’s wrong; the baby has grown. They should see her belly. Ellis attacks him, and they pull him off. Boyd yells for everyone to get out of the room. Ellis wants to go after Elgin, because he knows where she is.

Boyd tells his son that they are going to find out everything he knows, but he needs him to calm down. Donna asks if he thinks what Elgin said about how big Fatima’s gotten is true. He doesn’t know. Sara tells them that Elgin is not going to tell them. She knows what it’s like to have the place in her head. If he really believes what he is saying, that it is going to save everyone, he’s not going to tell them where she is. Boyd asks Donna where she keeps her tools. Donna after some hesitation says they are in the shed. Boyd tells Kenny to stay by the door. Elgin doesn’t come out and no one is to go back in the room.

Henry approaches Victor on the merry go round and asks him how things are going with Jasper and if he saw anything interesting so far. Victor says that he was right; he’s just a doll, and they don’t talk. Henry tells him that he just wanted to say that he’s sorry he hasn’t been more help. All this has been a lot for him, but that’s no excuse. Victor stops him, saying that he has to show him something. Victor says it will make him angry and make him hate him, but he has to show him, and then they will be done. He leads his father away.

Boyd enters the shed. He starts taking out tools, like a hammer and a chisel. Father Khatri appears and questions that he is really going to do it. Boyd says he doesn’t have time for him. Khatri asks what comes first, the saw or the hammer. He tells Boyd sarcastically that he should go old school and get some pliers and rip his fingernails off. Boyd says he will if that’s what it takes. Khatri asks if he doesn’t see the irony. Boyd asks him what he’s talking about. Khatri says that Fatima killed Tilly, and he didn’t even blink. He did everything he could to protect her and lied to the people he says he cared about. Kenny still doesn’t know what she did. Boyd says that what happened wasn’t her fault. He asks how that’s any different than with Elgin. The place got inside his head and made him think he’s doing something good, convinced him he’s protecting her, and he’s getting ready to go medieval on him. It’s a bit of a double standard. Boyd says this is different. There is nothing he could do about Tilly. Khatri tells him to tell himself whatever he wants. He walks around there like he’s some big knight in shining armor, but when push comes to shove, he’s no better than anyone else. Protect what’s yours and fuck anyone who gets in the way. He says that Boyd was supposed to be better than this. Boyd says to Khatri that he was supposed to be there. They were supposed to figure it out together. He’s the one who got his throat slit. He tells Khatri not to come in there and judge him; he’s doing the best he can. Khatri tells him that there is no coming back from this. He says that Boyd said he wasn’t going to let the place blank him, but if he does this, the place has won. Boyd says that if he doesn’t do this, his daughter-in-law dies. Khatri says that’s why they call it a rock and a hard place, not a rock and a soft comfy pillow.

He says that Boyd needs to decide who he is, because that’s who he is going to be from now on. Boyd looks away and when he turns back to him, he’s gone. Boyd takes the duffle bag and leaves.

Fatima is shouting and beating on the door. She picks up the jar of blood and throws it at the wall smashing it. She picks up a piece of the shattered glass from the jar.

Out at the truck, Jim asks what they are doing there. Jade says that he thought that maybe there was a reason the children came to her out there. He says that the only thing tying together all the crazy they’ve seen, him, Tabitha, and Miranda, the one point of overlap in all their Venn diagrams of crazy, is the children. Jim questions he’s seen them too, and Jade says he did in the cavern. He heard them say “ankhooey” and looked up, seeing the hole in the ceiling, and a tangle of roots forming the symbol. Tabitha says “the roots of the tree.” She tells him Victor heard the Boy in White says when the kids were on the stones they poured their hope into the roots that made the symbol and those roots became the tree. Jim asks if she means the bottle tree. She thinks so. Jade says the creepy kids made a magic tree and the symbols that have been plaguing him the whole time – He yells that they could have just told him. He says he’s sick of getting dicked around. If they really want their help, if there is something they want them to understand, they are going to have to do a little better, because they aren’t getting it. He says they are going to just sit and wait, and when they decide they have something more to say than “ankhooey,” they know where to find them.

Randall is doing chin-ups on the monkey bars when he hears the cicadas. He rips off his bandage and goes over to the ambulance.

Marielle is looking at Kristi’s leg and tells her she isn’t giving herself time to heal. Kristi says that Fatima is still out there; she can’t just sit there.

Randall comes in asking where the stuff from the ambulance is, the equipment. Marielle tells him it’s in the supply closet downstairs. He goes down, ignoring her calling after him. The cicada sound follows him to the basement. He gets out the defibrillator and takes it to his bed. He turns it on and is about ready to put the paddles to his head to stop the noise but is stopped by Marielle in time, who turns it off. He tells he to make it stop. She grabs him and makes him look at her. She tells him that he is going to be okay. She hugs him.

Back at Colony House, Boyd comes in telling them that no one comes upstairs and for Donna to make sure of that. He says that what happens next is on him. He goes up to the room and tells Kenny to go downstairs. Kenny says Elgin’s a good kid, and there has to be a way to make him understand. Boyd just says that Fatima is out there. She might be running out of time. Kenny steps out of the way when he asks him again and heads downstairs.

Boyd goes in the room. Elgin says he can’t tell him where she is. He wishes he could, but he can’t. Boyd tells him he understands and that he needs to do what he needs to do and that now he needs to do what he needs to do. Boyd pulls a table over and puts the bag on it, pulling out a hammer. The Polaroid camera flashes. Elgin tells him that’s how she sends him messages, and he thinks she wants to talk to him. He picks it up. It’s a picture of a house.

Victor has brought his dad to a place where there are two rocks on the ground that he’s painted. He says he tried to make it pretty. She would have liked it. He tells Henry that that’s where he buried his mother and thought he would want to see. Henry stoops to look at it. There is a smaller stone. His father asks if it’s Eloise. Victor says he thinks it is. He only found some of the pieces. She was so small, so there wasn’t much left. Victor says it’s his fault. He thought Jasper told Christopher his secrets, but he was wrong; it was the Boy in White. He told him about the children and the tree, and he was the one who told his mother. He told her that the tree would bring her to the children. He was the reason she left and died. If he hadn’t said anything they’d both be there. Henry says that he was just a boy, but Victor says that he should have died that night too, and he should pretend he did. He tells him that he doesn’t have to be his dad anymore. Henry yells at him not to ever say that again! He is his dad and will never stop being his dad. He tells Victor that she did what she did because she loved him and was trying to protect him. That’s his job now. Henry hugs him.

Jade says that if the kids made the tree, then the messages in the bottles with the numbers have to matter. Jim asks how he knows they mean anything. They don’t know who put them there. Jim says to think of all the people who have been there. They could be chasing someone’s random delusions. Tabitha says that Miranda knew it was important, why else would she have made replicas? Jade thinks she’s right. Jim questions there are ten numbers, two of which are backwards. Jade says the 2 and the 7s are. Jim says that there are twelve numbers then. Jade says he tried everything he can imagine and he lists all the ways he tried, but there is nothing there. Jim mentions there are twelve notes in the music scale with flats and sharps. Jim’s mother was a piano teacher and used to say music is the universal language. Jade calls him Teacup and tells him he’s a genius. He runs off saying he and Tabitha will go to the bar and for Jim to head to their house to get the violin Victor hid in the basement from him since he kept stealing it. He’s to get it then meet them after at the bar.

Kristi tells Marielle that she gave Randall something to help him try to sleep. Marielle isn’t sure what they will do when he wakes up. Kristi tells her that she tried be respectful and tried to give her space, but they need to talk. Randall tried to lobotomize himself and Julie’s a mess. She’s acting like everything is fine. Kristi says she doesn’t know what went through, but she needs her tell her if she’s okay. She makes Marielle look at her, and she eventually tells Kristi she’s not and that she doesn’t think any of them are going to be.

Elgin wants Boyd to tell him what was in the picture, but he just starts tying him up with an electrical cord. He tells him it was a picture of the house he bought with his wife when he retired, where they were going when they ran into the tree. The only thing missing was the boat. Elgin says she’s trying to show him they are going home; all he has to do is wait. Boyd takes out a saw and a screwdriver. Elgin tells him whatever he thinks he’s got to do, he doesn’t, because he would never hurt Fatima. She’s always been kind to him and everything he is doing is for her and to help them. Elgin says just to give it time. Boyd says they don’t have time. Boyd says he took his family, someone he loves, and put her in danger. He’s sorry what happened to him, but he’s going to tell him where she is, and he won’t stop hurting him until he tells him what he needs to know. Boyd threatens him with the hammer. Suddenly Khatri shows up. Boyd asks where she is and Elgin doesn’t answer. He tells him to put his hand on the table. He forces him when he doesn’t and then smashes it with the hammer when he won’t tell him where she is.

They can hear the screams from downstairs. Acosta comes in asking if there is news on Fatima but hears the screams and runs up the stairs. The others can’t stop her. She runs in and yells. Boyd tells her to turn around walk out the door. He says she doesn’t understand what’s going on. She says then to explain it. He tells everyone to get downstairs.

Tabitha asks Jade how he knows what order the numbers go in. He says they treat it like any composition and figure out what is a chord and what is a melody. Jade reads off some of the notes. He starts to hum a song. Jim arrives with the violin. Jim asks him what the song is, but Jade has never heard it before. He says he looked at the numbers, at the notes, and could hear the music. Jim stops him, saying that he doesn’t know if it is a good idea. The music just magically popped into his head, yet it doesn’t strike him as odd. Jade says everything about the place is odd. Jim responds the place is always trying to manipulate and hurt them. Jade asks how music could hurt them, and Jim asks if he is forgetting the music box and the juke boxes. Jade asks if they are just supposed to forget about it. Tabitha says that maybe they shouldn’t play it in town just to be safe and suggests since the messages were at the tree that they play it there.

Fatima tries to cut her stomach with the piece of glass, but before she gets very far, the kimono woman tells her to stop and takes it from her, holding it at her throat. She tells Fatima it’s coming, and her water breaks.

Julie and Ethan are eating at the diner. Ethan worries he will forget what Tian Chen was like, but she tells him he won’t. He says he’s starting to forget what Thomas was like. Julie says she has to tell him something and says that she doesn’t think she just had a dream in the ruins but that she actually went somewhere. She doesn’t know how, but suddenly she was in a chamber, and she saw her and Randall and Marielle chained to the wall screaming. She thinks that’s where they were when they couldn’t wake up. She left the chamber and went into the tunnels, and then she heard their mother’s voice talking to Victor. She thinks she was actually there, like she went back to that night. He tells her that she’s a story walker, someone who can visit chapters of the story that has already happened. She asks Ethan if she goes back to the ruins if he thinks she can do it again, but he doesn’t know. Julie tells him that if it’s real she can change things. She says she can save Tian Chen and maybe even save Thomas. Ethan tells her that it doesn’t work like that. You can visit the chapters but can’t change them. No one can change a story once it’s been told.

Boyd tells Acosta that it’s not what it looks like. She says it looks like he was torturing him. Acosta says that she gets they want to find her, but there is a right and wrong way to do it. Boyd tells her to tell him the right way. Meanwhile, Sara goes into Elgin’s room unnoticed. He tells her he can’t tell him. She tells him she understands and that that first day when she saw him in the church, her heart broke for him, because he seemed so sweet and kind. She was like that once. She thinks maybe they are exactly what the place looks for, people who just want to help. Elgin asks her to please tell Boyd to stop; he will listen to her. They just have to wait a little longer. She tells him if they do, Fatima could die. She says she knows he doesn’t believe her and thinks he’s saving everyone. Sara says that Boyd doesn’t understand how far he needs to go to make Elgin tell him. She picks up a screwdriver and says that Boyd is a good man, and the place has taken so much from him, she won’t let it take his soul. She’s already given it hers.

Meanwhile, Boyd is still arguing with Acosta. He tells her that it isn’t Camden, and he’s not debating it with her. They suddenly hear Elgin scream. They rush up and see Elgin, realizing she went in. She’s stabbed him in the eye and is covered with blood. They are all shocked. She tells Boyd that Fatima is in the root cellar.

Jade starts playing as Tabitha listens. Meanwhile, Boyd, Ellis and Kenny head to the root cellar. Underground, the kimono woman starts to deliver the baby as Fatima screams. The trap door opens. He continues to play as they head underground and hear her scream. She delivers…something. She goes down the trap door carrying the baby as the others make it to Fatima. She tells them that she took it. Boyd tells Ellis and Kenny to get her back to Colony House, because he needs to see it, whatever it is. He says he’s not going to be blindsided by the place again. He says he will be right behind them and heads through the trap door and down the stars.

Jade is still playing when the children start coming out of the woods. Jim can not see them, but they both can. He has stopped playing, so she tells him to keep going. One girl comes closer.

Boyd goes through the tunnels.

Fatima tells Ellis that she saw what they did. Those things that come out at night, she saw what they are. They sacrificed their children, because it promised them that they would live forever.

The creatures are standing around in the cave. Kimono woman places the baby onto the ground. It moves and grows as they watch. Boyd is watching from his hiding place. It continues to grow until it stands and breaks out of the placenta. It’s Smiley. He sheds the skin. He’s smiling

The girl comes up to Tabitha. She kneels down. Jade stops. The girl says “ankhooey.” Tabitha says “remember” and the girl smiles. Jade says it means remember. Tabitha cries. Jade says they tried to save them because one of them – he doesn’t finish his statement, he can’t. Tabitha tells Jim she can’t and runs off. Jim asks him what happened. Jade says that they used to sing them lullabies. Jim goes after her, but she says she can’t talk about it. He tells her to talk to him. She tells him that she knows why she sees those children, why Jade can see them. It’s why there’s more than one bracelet; she kept making them. Somewhere deep down she remembers. He doesn’t understand. She tells him it’s because they’ve been there before, her and Jade. The reason she felt what Miranda felt is because she was Miranda, and Jade was Christopher. They’ve come back over and over, because they failed the first time. The two of them were there in the beginning. They tried to save the children, to set them free - because one of them was theirs. She was their daughter; she can feel it. She tells Jim that she needs some time.

In voice over, Jim has a flashback to their trip in the RV and says that sometimes he remembers what it like when it wasn’t like this; it was like before. Jim in the real world walks to the RV. He’s upset, not knowing what to do.

Suddenly he hears Julie yelling for him and calls her over. She runs to him. She has shorter hair. She tells him that he has to get to town now. She thinks this is when “it” happens. She tells him she needs to change the story.

Suddenly the Man in Yellow walks up. He says that was one hell of a song. Jim tells Julie to run. She does but turns back. The Man in Yellow says that it didn’t have to happen. Knowledge comes with a cost. Jim tells him to back up and grabs a tree branch. He tells Jim that he did try to warn him. He grabs the branch from Jim and slams him against the RV. Julie yells at him to get off of her father, but he just pushes her away. The Man in Yellow tells him that his wife shouldn’t have dug that hole. He rips Jim’s throat out as Julie screams.
