Hysteria!, which premiered last month on Peacock, takes place in the late 1980s amidst the backdrop of the “Satanic Panic.” When a varsity quarterback’s disappearance sparks fear of occult activities in Happy Hollow, three outcast teens in a struggling high school heavy metal band decide to capitalize on the hysteria by branding themselves as a Satanic group. Their plan to become popular backfires when a bizarre series of murders occur, turning them into prime suspects in a town gripped by fear and paranoia.

In a recent interview with SciFi Vision, Bruce Campbell, who’s known for his iconic role as Ash in the Evil Dead franchise, talked about his role in the series as small-town police chief Ben Dandridge, shared insights into his extensive career in both horror and comedy, recounted working on big budget films with Sam Raimi, and much more.

Campbell, who is known for more comedic characters, plays a more dramatic part this time. The actor highlighted that life experiences have shaped his emotional range over the years. “Emotional stuff used to be really difficult for me, because I wasn’t a big crier,” said Campbell. “Now I can cry at the drop of a hat.”

The actor emphasized the significance of quality writing, stating, “Comedy is easy if it’s good writing. If it’s bad writing or not funny, you’re never going to make it funny just because you cast a funny person.”

Campbell also shared his thoughts on his character’s approach to law enforcement. It was important to him that the character was not cliché. “He talks to teenagers like they’re teenagers, like they’re a person,” he explained. “Cops and citizens have had problems over the years, and I like portraying a cop that I want. I want him as my small town chief. I want that guy. You can come up to him, tell him your problems. He wouldn’t blow you off.”
