The faux-documentary, Hunting Matthew Nichols, which was directed by Markian Tarasiuk, follows Tara Nichols, an aspiring filmmaker, as she investigates her brother’s mysterious disappearance on Vancouver Island, which occurred two decades ago. When new evidence is revealed, it leads her to suspect that her brother may still be alive.

Inspired by the popularity of true crime movies, shows, podcasts, etc., as well as other found footage films, Tarasiuk presented the idea for the movie to writer Sean Oliver, who wrote the script. The film mixes archival and found footage, documentary style interviews, and scripted scenes, creating something new, and audiences may wonder how much of the movie is real, and how much is imagined. It's a thrill ride towards a shocking conclusion.

The movie, sometimes referred to as the "Canadian Blair Witch," has been making the film festival circuit and was recently screened at the Whistler Film Festival as part of the Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Feature. The movie also won Best Found Footage Feature and Best Editing (Jonathan Mathew) at FilmQuest Festival, as well as Best Director for Tarasiuk at the Blood in the Snow Festival.

Recently, Tarasiuk spoke with SciFi Vision about directing the found footage film, in which he also appeared as himself, directing a documentary about the missing teen.
