SciFi Vision | Interviews | Daredevil: Born Again Star Ayelet Zurer on Vanessa Fisk's Loyalty & Tragic Fate
SCIFI VISION: Why did Vanessa go to the fight? I mean, I feel like she maybe thought better of it and went anyway. Is it really just kind of her loyalty to him or is it more than that? How do you feel about that?
AYELET ZURER: I think the whole season, what's going on is that maybe Vanessa is beginning to think that there is no end to the game. Nothing will be enough, and I think what hurts most is that maybe she's not enough and she will not be able to take him off the game and go to some island.
So, once the feeling of dread coming in with the sort of intense knowing that she's being hunted and knowing who is hunting her, she, I believe, is taking one step towards making it happen rather than waiting for the trap. When the games begin, and the game is pretty much to draw everybody in, including Poindexter, and she's not invited. She's sent away to do some political bullshit [laughs] from her point of view, she really is not going to, you know, in a way, in the scene before, she's actually telling him, “There's no way I'm not showing up.”
And I think she shows up, because she knows what's going to happen. She's taking a step towards protecting him. She'd rather take the bullet than him taking the bullet, hoping, I think, she can manage it. And she almost does, really. She does shoot well, apparently.
But, you know, the end is sort of inevitable for her, because, I think, really, the show needed a massive gun to blow him out of proportion, you know? She came to protect him. I think she's loyal to a fault, and she's just taking the bullet for him.
SCIFI VISION: All right, that's fair. I want to ask, though, I personally feel like, I'm curious if you feel the same way, but I feel like a lot of times she's sort of been the man behind the curtain, so to speak. She's sort of been the mastermind in a lot of things. Do you feel like that? And I guess, what does it look like for him now that she's not there and he's going to have to make [all the decisions himself]. I mean, I think he thinks he's making all the decisions himself, I'm not saying he doesn't think that, but I think a lot of it, yeah, has been her. So, how do you feel about that?
AYELET ZURER: I think she's a complicit, you know, for sure, she's complicit. And I think they think together, but he has always been the plan. He has an ambition that I think she doesn't have. He needs to conquer. He needs to conquer more and more and more. The bigger he is, the bigger he wants. You know, he's just like, there's no end to his expansion of power, of control, of whatever that thing he needs to in order to feel alive. So, she doesn't have that.
So, I do believe that he runs the show in a way, but I think she always held him back into a place of control. She was able to do that for him, and I think now when she's gone, it's going to just go wild.
And it is an emotional thing, you know, for them to lose each other is a big deal, because he has been her sort of protector in a way and a buffer. He's been her skin, I think, and she has been his blood, his soul. One sort of can't live without the other. So, it's going to be very interesting to see what happens.
SCIFI VISION: Yeah, I think so too. He's going to go off the rails, that's for sure. So, their conversation of her trying to get him to leave then, because you said that she knew he wouldn't, was that just sort of like a last ditch effort then? How do you see that scene if you don't think she really thought she could convince him?
AYELET ZURER: To what?
SCIFI VISION: To try to leave. When she's saying they could go to the island, that they could get away from this. So, how do you view it then?
AYELET ZURER: I think she really truly believed that if it's not happening, if he's not letting go of the plan that he has and starting to look at what he has as enough, then things will go the wrong way. I think she really really knows that. I think that's the point. That's the beginning of where we start for her, season two. You know, things happen.
There was a lot of killing going on in season one.
SCIFI VISION: There's a lot of killing going on all the time. [laughs]
AYELET ZURER: Yeah, that one too I mean, hey, but also in a sense where she's complicit. She's definitely took a step towards it. So, something has changed, I think, inherently inside of her. And I think she sort of maybe wants to slow down on that, but he is not willing to slow down. So, in a way, she has to deal with what is, which was always the case. But now something emotionally is sort of moving in a different direction.
SCIFI VISION: Talk about your costumes, because you got some really great dresses. And did you get to keep any of them? That's the other question.
AYELET ZURER: Well, no. [laughs] That's one of the most saddest things that I can say. And I've asked. I had an amazing costume - I mean, our costume designer, Emily, is really phenomenal. We spend a lot of time at our office figuring out the colors and the shapes and what works and doesn't work. There was [laughs] a lot of conversation about at the beginning of season one, they wanted me in pants. And I was like, I refused to do pants, because I always thought that in order to be a boss, you don't need to wear pants. In fact, to keep her femininity was really, really important, especially in opposite of him. But there was a lot of discussion about the white, when the white comes in, when the red comes in, when she becomes a complicit, when she actually makes a killing herself.
She slowly moves from the whites to the reds. And there's a lot of sense of like structure. And yeah, I did not keep a thing.
SCIFI VISION: Talk about - I guess it's not technically her death, but about the the effect and like getting stabbed in the [side of her head], I guess, it's impaled, however you want to say it. Talk about filming that.
AYELET ZURER: Actually, it was really easy. There was a, we tested it. And it worked really well.
And on the day, we moved into the makeup booth, and they did it, and then we shot it. There was a lot of stop and go, stop and go, for blood. But it was I have to say it was more than that. It was really an emotional day. Both episodes were so emotional, because we were not - we knew where we were going. And yeah, we've been close and friends and partners for a long time in this thing. And me and Vincent really appreciate each other. I love him to death, and I think it's fabulous. And just saying goodbye in that way felt really emotional, you know?
So yeah, we had all these gadgets in the action, but it was the real layer that the actors I think bring is real in that show, and that was real for us.
SCIFI VISION: Obviously, in the newest episode that [just aired], you're mostly in the in the bed. You don't really move a whole lot. Is it harder to be restricted and not be able to more use your body to do the scenes? Or does it make it easier for you? I'm just kind of curious how you feel about that and how it affects your performance?
AYELET ZURER: It's really interesting. I never thought this was the way to go, or I didn't plan it or [think about] it, but it sort of evolved out of the seasons. Through the evolution of her, she became more and more compressed, and more and more held, and very, very acutely listening to everybody else. And so and I think it also came from Vincent’s performance, which was always very big and this. And so for me, it was like, where his energy is like explosive, my energy is constrictive to compensate for that, and I think it was like, now, looking back, I think that's what's what was going on. It wasn't like conscious decision making, it was just like slowly getting there.
SCIFI VISION: Do you think that you might be coming back for flashbacks? I know you can't tell me, but I guess I should say what would you be happy to do it? I'm sure you would be.
AYELET ZURER: Absolutely. I would come for any flashback.
SCIFI VISION: What's the thing other than the people that you're going to miss the most?
AYELET ZURER: I loved the team. There's an amazing team. The makeup team is amazing. And I loved sitting in their space and enjoyed the conversation and just working with them. I really loved working with Hillary, the DP. She's a female DP. She's an amazing artist, I think, and really appreciative of, you know, like good acting. And that was fun. And I would miss the sitting down together with the with the team, you know, with the writers who wrote this, the scene and talking about it.
But mostly, I think I will miss working with Vincent, because for so many years, it was just me and him. It was so intense, and our friendship grew, and I really appreciate everything he's done for me. He's been very protective of me through that show. Yeah, so I'm gonna miss a lot of it.
I'm gonna miss New York. Not in the winter so much.
SCIFI VISION: Yeah, I was gonna say I'm in the East Coast too, and winter, not so much. [laughs]
AYELET ZURER: I miss having dinners with Charlie and Deborah and Margarita. And you know, this is a great team there, really.
SCIFI VISION: Well, hopefully you'll be back at least like I said, at least for flashbacks. You never know. All right, well, we're out of time. But thank you so much. I appreciate it.
AYELET ZURER: Thank you. Thank you, Jamie.
SCIFI VISION: Hopefully I'll talk to you again another time. Thanks so much. Have a good rest of your day, bye bye.
