Tomorrow FOX kicks off its special two-night premiere event of Almost Human. Coming from executive producer J.J. Abrams and creator and executive producer J.H. Wyman, the new sci-fi action series is sure to be a hit.

Almost Human, which is set in the year 2048, follows Detective John Kennex, played by Karl Urban, who wakes up from a coma after surviving an attack on the police department. He has lost his leg, which has been replaced by a synthetic one, and most of his memory of the event, other than that his partner was killed.

When Kennex returns to duty, he finds that all of the officers are required to partner with androids, which he is very adverse to. He reluctantly agrees at the request of Captain Sandra Maldonaldo, played by Lili Taylor, but his partnership is short-lived when he ends it after the robot discovers some incriminating evidence against him.

Kennex is then partnered with Dorian, played by Michael Ealy, a robot from a line that was discontinued due to their "flaws" of showing emotion. Dorian just might be what Kennex needs.

Almost Human is sure to be a fan favorite, and with the creative team involved, it's no surprise. The show did remind me in small ways of Fringe, seeing the myriad of possibilities of where the story could go, but if you weren't a fan, don't let that detract you. In a previous interview, Abrams and Wyman talked about the fact that this is not a mythology heavy show – there will be individual cases each week through which we will learn more about the characters. The show also seems less dark and serious and I think may be more action oriented and less complex. I do believe though if you are a fan of Abrams' and Wyman's previous work, you will most likely love this show.

The cast is of course stellar. Urban and Ealy play really well off of each other – Kennex is part synthetic now, and with Dorian's human emotions, they are well suited to each other. They also of course have their humorous moments together, which is great.

Even though the cut I saw was not final, the visuals are stunning. The overall look of the futuristic city is exceptional and the effects look like they are going to be tremendous as well.

The script of the pilot was excellent, and again, with the creative team, I expect they will continue that way.

Overall I really enjoyed the show. It's definitely a fun buddy-cop show, but it's more than that. Being set in the future of course helps to make Almost Human stand out among other cop shows, but I think it's really the writing and the characters that will keep people coming back week after week. I also think a less serialized story may help with that as well, but it will also have the overall mythology threads fans like me will come back for.
